Even that drop, tbh. It's really pushing it to call that an attempt at a catch rather than just stopping the ball going over your head. Even if he didn't realise it was an edge -- which I can buy, no one seemed to notice that edge and as such it probably wouldn't have been given out or reviewed -- that's the kind of absent-minded cricket which has gotten Aus into this position in the last two games.

I reckon it would be so much better in the hands of a better captain who could actually control the frustrations of the team rather than giving into them and was disciplined and consistent about enforcing proper bowling plans. Paine has let this game drift so hard since Pant got out.
Yeah given Clarke this attack and it really would be an ATG one. Hell it probably would be one with a batting lineup that knew how to take advantage when the going was good!

India's top order better learn from the balls these two have shown this whole game and put in a stellar shift in the 2nd innings

Going to be interesting to see how India bowl next innings. These two will be exhausted. Can Saini bowl? If not it's all on Siraj and Nattu

Oh yeah I'm not letting the attack off the hook here, this is a serious black mark against all of them that this keeps happening. It's just that it's principally Paine's job to make sure it doesn't.
It showed in his sledge last test - he expected Australia just to show up at Brisbane and win. It happened in England in 2019 as well. Australia should have won that 2-1 or 3-1 but the intensity was way down in the 5th test and it ended up 2-2.

I think Paine checks out early from a captaincy point of view.

Cummins doesnt
And I think that's part of the problem, when the "go to" bowler doesn't have a hit me style "if all else fails" wicket-taking option it means it's harder to pull it back when the opposition batsmen start to dominate. Unless you're at close to full intensity all the time it does mean that partnerships can be built.

Why Australia seems to drop off in intensity is another question........
