Why? This is test cricket mate. Always field your best bowlers.
Unless it a clear cut example of selecting somebody who suits the conditions (I think Neser may be pretty useful next time Australia tours across the ditch for example) you always pick the best bowling attack you have fit and available in Test cricket

So which of our brains trust is out there providing guidance on the bowling like McDermott used to do? Heck, even in the intervals or at drinks?

Not sure why they really need to. Though they did function very well when McDermott was bowling coach from memory.

I found it surprising that one of McDermott's first tasks was to remind players that bowling half-arsed short **** on leg wasn't the way to go.

True but workload balancing is a real thing. :)
The lesser formats are where you give people a break.
These two points are not that opposed tbh. There's a point at which a fully fit and fresh Pattinson/Neser/JRichardson (once he's actually able to play long form cricket) will be > an exhausted Starc or Hazlewood at risk of breaking down (Cummins seems frankly invincible at this point). Don't think that point has been hit yet, though.

I understand the sentiment but I feel this might be the Indian top 3 in ODIs thing all over again and may end up being an ultimate detrimental net effect to the team goals, that is all. Not saying there is any easy fix to it but sometimes, you gotta take a bold step or two.

Very different situation with regards to bowlers though. I know purists here and elsewhere absolutely hate it, and I understand that, but I suspect that if you look dispassionately at the data and the results the "rotation" policy for fast bowlers will have worked far more than it didn't. And as you point out, it's something that happens a lot away from home anyway. I don't think it's something that should be dismissed out of hand.

Which is a roundabout way of saying that I actually think your original suggestion - try and blood some of the more fringe bowlers in less marquee series - isn't a bad one. It's certainly worth considering. Depth is something you don't just get for free, you have to actually take active steps to build it.

Meh nothing different to what we do with Ashwin/Jaddu in SENA. It "protects" their stats somewhat which is no bad thing. That's one of the perks of having good bench strength.

Pattinson is a very unlucky guy. Spends years in and out with injury and now that he's fit can't get a test and is perennially 4th in line.
