he has nice mechanics and is young. Can bat, good attitude. Just needs time and overs under his belt to groove his action.
These two are oft repeated but I don't see their particular relevance. His batting shouldn't come into whether he's picked as our sole spinner in England, especially when we tend to have a decent tail anyway, and have an abundance of allrounders. And plenty of guys have come in with a good attitude but just haven't been good enough. I don't see him as a young Lyon with bags of potential, I feel like he's only ever going to be okay.

If I were England I’d defintely be picking Moeen in India, regardless of whether he’s “cold” or not.England need to protect Bess he’s still very young yet, if things went Dane Piedt for him out there, he could find it very hard to come back from.

are there better young spin prospects in England?

Probably not tbh. I see why he's around the setup, but I don't think he should be picked ahead of Leach as the sole spinner, and I also don't see him contributing much against India. You're right though, the pickings are slim.

I think we have to hope Moeen has regained some of his confidence with the ball to have any success, but that also seems unlikely.

This is what it comes down to. Who in county cricket could come in? I don't see anyone particularly. Leach has been ill and barely played for the last 13 months. Ali's confidence at rock bottom and wasn't available to play tests last winter.

iirc Bess bowled fairly consistently and held an end up in South Africa last winter, and was criticised for not putting enough action on the ball. Since then he seems to have been working on getting more action on the ball but has less consistency as a result.

It's why I was all for getting Moeen back into the action this winter.
