Ashwin v Lyon

id much rather play all my home games as spinner in india than aus. lyon for me, though the htb is improving away
Lyon definitely has a lower ceiling though. He doesn't do things like the Cook ball. It's close and Lyon got the **** end of the condition sticks but Ashwin has more strings to his bow.

Lyon is very durable and has an economical action. He’s only 33. Considering we have elite quicks, Lyon plays his role well

If no whiz kid spinner comes thru the ranks, there’s no reason Lyon doesn’t play for another 3-5 years. Perhaps even much longer. He seems like he’s a guy who loves it.
You have hit on a really good point there, Lyon is nothing if not durable, both of mind and of body. Never missed a Test injured in his entire career

Whatever it takes!!!
Ashwin easily the better bowler. I suppose Lyon is better value for his side sometimes but that is really a commentary of the team and their roles, than their abilities.

ashwin averages 22.8 in india, lyon - 30.58
ashwin averages 21.57 in sri lanka, lyon - 33.58
lyon average in uae - 53.8

so much for "rather playing in asia"

lyon has been taking away wickets for longer than 5 minutes tho
ashwin averages 21.57 in sri lanka, where nz's greatest ever team could not win in 2019 and aus was whitewashed. you cant not consider it "away".

ashwin is in the icc team of the decade and has been the player of the year and test player of the year. he has a 900+ peak rating(904). lyon's peak rating isn't even 800 (774).

ashwin averages 25.53, lyon 31.98 - an average differential of 6.45. would we have this comparison in reverse?

comparing these two is like comparing cummins and shami. one a potential atg and the other a solid consistent bowler. average differences are also the same.

umesh yadav> boult cause boult gets to ball in bowling friendly conditions?
dev>hadlee?

the indian spinner that lyon deserves to be compared to is harbhajan singh - solid but not a great. and the stats are similar.

tbh, this comparison (mostly by australians tbh) seems very condescending and slightly racist. you are comparing a brown man who is one of the greatest at his art with a white man who is decent but not great.
The rest of your post was fine, but this was rather needless... Suggest you delete that. This forum is many things, but most of the regulars here are not of that type.

thats why i said little.

im not suggesting its overt malice but more of a subconscious casual thing.

like india is criticized for it's home record when being no 1 but australia last won an away series when obama was president. no one talks about that.

australia have won 3 tests in asia in the 2010s (and one was against bangladesh).

the only reason this comparison happens. no one compares yasir shah to ashwin (or herath when he played).
Lots of Yasir Vs Ashwin discussion till Yasir sucked more than Ash overseas. Again, please stop with the racism accusations. Your other perfectly valid and good points are getting lost coz of that crappy one.

I get the feeling you're a troll who won't be long for this forum, but if you're going to use stats - make sure they're not completely wrong, like this Sri Lanka one is. EDIT: Maybe you meant 'win series' which draws a pretty low bow to your angle.

i meant series ofc thats why i used whitewash for the aussies.

my point was him discounting sl as "Away". mind you ashwin actually played against a much stronger sl lineup in 2015 with sangakarra.

The fact that people are willing to give this person the benefit of the doubt after making easily the most horrendous post that I have witnessed since a certain bovine was sent off to the abattoir is the embodiment of everything that is wrong with this forum of recent times

I'll give you 10000 to 1 that little lulu won't last a month

Lyon by far ftr. Ravi is garbage

Even the most parochial Aussies will happily admit Ashwin is a better skilled bowler than Lyon. Throwing out racism allegations isn't much chop.

The whole thing about Lyon is we know he isn't the best ever, that's why the GOAT tag is funny. What we do know however is that he takes roughly four wickets per test, and we can rely on him to rarely get taken apart, even when he needs to bowl really long spells. He's very durable, and very accurate. He's a very good guy to have complimenting Cummins, Haze and Starc.
