My theory was Australia wanted to survive until lunch and then go for it. But yes, given how comfortable Smith attacking looked after lunch he could've afforded to be more proactive.

Even so 130 overs is plenty of time to bowl someone out.

I'm obviously not blaming Smith for the draw. My post was more to show the absurd bias in commentary when taking about Pujara's pace and Smith's. Especially considering the match situation for the two.

Certainly after taking only one wicket in the first session, I thought a draw possible. The bowling did not look at all threatening for a large part of the day. And as had happened in the last series, our bowling wilted when the one plan they clearly had didn't work.

All this 'B-side' talk is a little misleading. Apart from Kohli, what other batsmen would India have had in? It was the batting that did Aus in the end. Nice in a way to see some proper stonewalling, if only to stick it to the #intent / "I'd prefer to lose than go for a draw" crowd

don't agree at all that the first session yesterday seriously harmed australia in the pace. they could have maybe gotten, what, 30 more runs if they batted a bit more aggressively? that's not the difference in this game.

not making 450 in the first innings and killing the game then and there, that was the difference in the game. and, obviously, dropping a stack of vital catches and bowling about three miles from the stumps for most of the evening session.
