3rd Test at the SCG, Sydney, 7 Jan - 11 Jan 2021

they made it to tea!

Big job in this last session. I think Haze and Cummins will take the semi-newish ball to start with, so Ash and Vihari have to find a way to get their eye in all over again, then dig in and bat time.

127 runs isn't out of the question, but I don't think we have the batting resources to chase it. Vihari, Ashwin and Jadeja have to be going for the draw.

No chance. India's hopes of a win lived and died with Pant's innings.
With Pujara imo. He was still being proactive after Pant went. Been so throughout this knock actually, without taking crazy risks. Goes to show what he can be by being a little more assertive.

Would look a *very* interesting Test if Jadeja and Vihari were fit. Still might be, but given who's out there scoring 3.5 per over will be difficult. Australia well ahead but India have shown serious guts this series, so something might be brewing.
This presupposes identical first innings totals and second Dig declaration if Jadeja is fit

India showing a lot of bottle, but does feel like another glorious failure which we have so often last few years on their travels.

One wicket, then an injured Jadeja and the three rabbits.

Not ideal!

Whatever it takes!!!
hell of a lot cards stacked against them though. regardless of what happens they go out from this series with reputations enhanced imo.
I think a lot of it was happening yesterday too. I have seen Smith flog hundreds against us so many times now and it usually looks hopeless against him once he is set. Yesterday, and even in the first innings, Bumrah was beating him a lot of times, Saini did it a few times, Siraj too and in the second innings, Ashwin was definitely getting the better of the exchanges inspite of the match position meaning Smith got a lot of easy singles. He beat him in flight when Smith hit him over the covers and a number of times, Smith played bach when he should have been playing forward and the way he dismissed him is something that never happens with Smith V India when he has made 30 or 40+. Think there is a lot of truth to what Ash said in the presser about how every adversity seems to be making the group come together stronger.

nah, thakur's batting is greatly exaggerated. he's not much use imo, and a cricinfo profile check (the gold standard of statistics) reveals a fc batting average of 16.
He is a bit of an Agarkar. He will most likely fail a lot of times for single figure scores but he is a decent batsman if he can get past that phase, which would have been much handier now.

Having said that, Saini was not the worst with the bat in NZ in the T20s.

Think 'patience' will be India's watchword here.

Also, three of their batsmen were run out in the first innings, so they'll have a much better chance assuming they're going for the draw as they oughtn't be looking for stupid runs.

they're not going to go for the win. that was a three that turned into a somewhat marginal single.
