let’s remember some guys

michael beer, who scored a lone test for australia in the grim warne-to-lyon years where the spin cycle went on and on, and didn't do much in there. in fairness i believe he got that test in perth which, while it was his home ground, was perth, and not exactly a paradise for the spinners. however...

he went on to reinvent himself as a legitimate pioneer in bbl cricket, and was the first spinner here to bowl in the early overs, doing so well before it took hold as a legitimate tactic used by every team. bowling induckers and outswingers and 95-100km, beer along with jason behrendorff were the key cogs in the scorchers team that sucked the life out of bbl cricket by defending 137 week in and week out at #TheFurnace, which is what they were calling the waca at the time ("so give me five bees for a quarter, you'd say at the time").

now

if you were a bbl watcher between 2012 and 2015 and you don't go for the scorchers, chances are you've seen your team derailed in a low chase against perth because michael beer opened the bowling and took 1/21 (4).

he went on to play for the stars after his scorchers years, long after the band broke up at perth, but that was less auspicious. nonetheless he went from someone who's the answer to a cricket trivia question to a genuine pioneer of tactics in domestic and arguably international t20 cricket, all the while doing so with a funny and memorable name.

Along the same lines, John Hastings
my dude!! and he has peak Guy career trajectory as well, given he was a one test wonder who seven years later came back from the dead to string together what was a pretty decent run in the ODI squad, and if i recall correctly he and mitch marsh won an epic in nz with the bat.

was given the nickname "the duke", not as in the duke of hastings as one could initially think, but because of his first two given names, "john wayne". another guy who tore it up in the bbl after getting his maiden and only test. played for the stars, so unfortunately didn't get a title. was going to come over to the sixers before retiring from health problems. was at a mate's party once and a cousin of his was there because she works with my mate, and i was encouraging my mate all night to get in with her because they hit it off tbh. no dice.

Arshad Khan is definitely a guy. Bowled classically beautiful off breaks and put together what looks like a pretty reasonable bite-sized Test record by almost exclusively getting selected for Pakistan as a second spinner on turners throughout his career.

He ended up driving cabs in Australia for a while after his Test career before getting the gig as the Pakistan Women's coach.

I feel like Pakistan produce a disproportionate amount of guys.

Probably only partly because of their selection policy, and also partly because we don't have a big Pakistan supporter community here so we don't see heaps of discussion about their players and selection machinations. Players are much more likely to become guys in a "oh yeah I remember that guy" way if we aren't hearing about why they should be dropped or recalled on the regular.

Mohammad Nawaz (3)

The ultimate Guy imo, so nondescript that he had to be identified by a number.

His debut Test was Sydney, which of course was supposed to be spin-friendly but he came into an Aus squad that was well and truly beaten already and on a hiding to nothing. It was also Khawaja's debut ftr.

Hold up, Hastings' test came after the first bit of his ODI career - including that 2011 England series that left me with vivid memories of Jonathan Trott and another guy - Steven Davies. Didn't play from 2011 until 2015 though, the test being in that time. He was in really good Shield form too IIRC.

Brendan Nash was a funny one. Genuinely struggled to get a regular game for Queensland and then just walked into the WI side.

I always thought Hastings was a chucker

Definitely the Pakistani selectorial whims, combined with the fact that their pace bowling stocks especially have been pretty crap for the past decade despite the plaudits that every wunderkind coming out of there gets.
