*Official* Pakistan in New Zealand 2020/21

Cricket is so ****ing stupid. Australia get docked WTC points for being 2 overs short, meanwhile here they deliberately cut play short for no reason.
There were two rain delays during the day. NZ did very well to get the overs in.

Whatever it takes!!!
Azhar Ali is under rated. Rizwan is awesome. Jamieson is the real deal but has to keep a level head on his shoulders. Southee is under rated. Boult has lost form but will get it back. CdG is missed. Naseem should not tinker with his action and go the Munaf Patel route. Shaheen Afridi is very very good but not quite a matchwinner. Faheem Ashraf and Haris Sohail are excellent additions to the Pak test line up.

If Pakistan can hold there catches they’re really in this. Would still probably slightly favour NZ to win, but 300 is 50 above par, and 50 more than Pakistan should’ve got. Boult was ragged all day, Southee waaay down on pace. Jamieson obviously great, I thought Henry was dreadfully unlucky but man they missed Wags today and his ability to restore order when things start getting out of hand.

Azhar was great, paced his innings beautifully and Pakistan as a whole were much much better not only in terms of #intent but also just generally at knocking the ball into gaps and putting pressure on the fielders.

Yeah this is exactly how I feel. Well as Azhar and Rizwan played (very well thought out counterattack, quite Steve Waugh-esque), Pakistan have probably got around 50-60 more than they should have given the pitch. India's 242 was very competitive last season before they folded in the second innings, so interesting times ahead.

The turning point was right after lunch I thought - Jamieson was looking freakishly unplayable just before the break and I doubt Rizwan and Azhar would have relished the thought of facing him after that, and then KW turned to Boult who leaked 16 or something off that over to Rizwan which really reversed the momentum. Of course the new ball duo are allowed off-days, perhaps they tried too hard in conditions which were gift-wrapped for them. I see a lot of people on the forum bagging Henry, which I find ridiculous as far as today's play is concerned. I think it's more frustration about the drop off in quality for the role he's been selected - he looked far more threatening than Boult and Southee. While Jamieson is obviously a different bowler to Wagner he's shown he is excellent 3rd seamer material, which bodes well for the future.

I know our guys are very athletic and fit. But I really don't understand how boult southee and henry have actually dropped in pace. They move around and field like 20 yo's but them being in their late 20's to early 30's, entering the prime of a fast medium bowlers' career, they have dropped some speed instead of putting on more. I don't get it. Yeah its unreal to expect them to bowl low 140's and high 130's all day....but damn, low 130's and high 120's is just too low of a standard these days. We can get away with it at home but away we are always found wanting. India have become so much more competetive with thier previously low 130's to low 140 guys maintaining 136-145 all day.

Boult bowling to the tail at the end of the first test was up in the 140s, I think he actually hit 146.

TBH it's his seam presentation/wrist position which is just slightly off at the moment. Not sure if anyone has pointed it out to him but if he fixes that he'll go back to swinging it around corners as Southee has been doing at times.

Good day's cricket today and an innings of 300 usually sets up an interesting contest. I honestly don't know whether Pakistan will come out tomorrow and find the same seam movement, take early wickets and threaten NZ with a sub-200 total and a big deficit... or whether NZ will see off the new ball, the sun will come out, the pitch ease up and NZ canter to 450. It really could go either way.

Agree with the other comments that NZ should have had Pakistan for 230-240. The dropped catch alone cost 44 runs directly and more in partnership runs - it would've been 176/6 and robbed the side of the chance to really apply pressure to the debutant Gohar. And yeah, Henry and Boult, even if we accept they struggled to take wickets, were otherwise too loose as can be seen by the RRs conceded.

Pakistan batsmen deserve credit though - unlike the first test there was no crawlolapse where they struggled to push 1.5 per over. Azhar simply played well, while Rizwan, Faheem and Gohar #intented their way to a good score.

Will be a good day tomorrow.

Asif, Philander and Abbas operate at those speeds and were/are well good. Even guys like Kyle Abbot bowled low 130s and bowled well in Australia. Ishant not much quicker. From what I've seen in the Ind/Aus series, the Indian bowlers are bowling around low 130s to low 140s mainly and their success is on due to the great lines they're hitting.

Sorry if this has been said but I really dislike the Mitchell selection. Same as the Windies Test he played, he is selected in seam friendly conditions and bowls 2 overs on the first day, and isn't the best batsman available. The selectors might call it 'balance' but the balance is well out of wack when you could pick a batsman (Conway) or a better seamer who can hold a bat (Bracewell).

It's a very 'he's in the squad that's what we're doing' mentality and in hindsight, I agree with Kippax that the same mentality saw Young play over Conway when if you really weighed up the best choice, it was Conway.

297 does look a good score given the conditions. Do people think they will change? If I recall correctly, they didn’t change much over the course of the match with India here last year - but we did get 585/4 against Sri Lanka at Hagley a couple of years ago after day 1 produced scores of 178 and 88/4 (which quickly became 104 all out early on day 2).

I am nervous as all get out this morning. Neither Latham nor Blundell are convincing against the swinging ball, and if they go quickly then I am can easily imagine Williamson and Ross being nicked out early.

What's the deal with Neesham? I know Lord Colin is the man in possession of the allrounder spot but does he not go well enough to get a look in as a stand in?

we were wondering why he was in the cold but when i did a "who is actually doing what in the shield past 5 years" list i discovered he has been averaging 29 with the bat compared to the low 40s (iirc) of cdg and mitchell.

from what i've seen at test level mitchell's a decent bat and perfectly fine 5th bowler, he's only a wasted selection because they're not actually using him as an allrounder.
