How many seamers did we lose to Kolpak/T20/retirement in the last few years ? Steyn,Morkel,Philander, Abbott, Olivier, Viljoen, de Lange ?
Just on this, is there any talk of/appetite for recalls for Abbott or Olivier in a post-Kolpak world?

Both were pretty much at the top of their game when they took the county quid.

Guess there might be a bit of resentment amongst their peers, but Faf went Kolpak early doors and he seems to have been completely re-embraced.

I think it will take a lot. Only have to see Harmer's interviews on coming back.

CSA's stance might be different with the positive early changes at boardroom level. There was a push to play more black cricketers domestically and then this created a bottleneck for young talented white cricketers to get an opportunity. So you would imagine going back to the provincial system with more teams that has been muted would have to happen and then there is the need for people to drop their ego's from both sides and come to an amicable agreement for the betterment of SA cricket. Financially there may be another obstacle but I would imagine that would be overcome if the environment to play cricket for all was more welcoming and the interim board definitely have people with crickets best interest at heart in Yacoob and Judith February.

First time since 1999 we don't have one batsmen averaging over 40 in our test batting line-up.

G.Kirsten and Cullinan had dropped a bit before they got it to mid 40s by the end of their careers.

What has happened to Shanaka's seam presentation?

He was always only medium pace but his seam presentation on debut in England was fantastic. I don't think he got his wrist behind one ball in that spell; truly dire stuff. He batted well but his bowling is basically a non-starter internationally if that's what he's going to serve up.

Pakistani opening bat Shan Masood - proud owner of 8 FC wickets @ 72 - had a trundle in South Africa a couple of seasons ago, and I reckon he bowled the same pace with a better seam presentation.

Good observation. I recall seeing him in Tests before and although he was gentle pace he had some decent skill. Actually rated his Test match bowling prospects higher than Mathews.

Faf was a different situation though. He wasn't in the running for international selection when he went Kolpak and decided not to carry on with it., whereas Abbott and Olivier had both played for South Africa before going Kolpak.

And while it wasn't necessarily their fault, the timing of their Kolpaks was very awkward, coming after they had broken into the South African side (a really hard task to do considering they were up against Steyn, Philander, Morkel, and Rabada), so did leave something of a sour taste.

Definitely. Those guys couldn't get a place in the side ahead of quota players Steyn and Morkel.
Easy to be glib but some blinders exist if the increased uncertainty/decreased probability of selection is not taken into account.

There's just something old-school about Elgar that I really love. Plays only one format and just has that nuggety, steely quality of 90s openers

Yeah, looks like the sort of chap you'd want in the trenches with you.

Lot to like about this opening partnership too: left hand/right hand, accumulator/stroke maker.

That said, I note Deano was actually outscoring his more flowing mucker until those last couple of fours.

Would be nice to see Hasaranga actually flight some and create some in-decision in the batsman. Far too flat currently
