to be fair, we did win the game after the 47ao game (and as @Prince EWS will note, in one of my favourite ever Tests) so it's not impossible to bounce back. but you absolutely have to bat well first dig at the mcg, if you don't the psychological collapse pretty much follows inevitably.
Loved that game at the Wanderers. A Pat Cummins not old enough to drink working over Jacques Kallis and an aging Ricky Ponting taking on Morne Morkel with his career on line. Amazing game

Yeah, it is the same reason I think Sehwag and Ashwin are ridiculously under rated here as well. Having them in your side basically guarantees that you win at home. And as long as you have decent players in the other 9, you can still compete away. HTBs are not the problem in test cricket. Sure, there maybe others who are better than them, it does not make them any less special though.
yeah i started out on here already mostly on the "utility > roundedness" side of the debate but have definitely moved even further and further into that camp as time has gone on (as people who have read my contributions to the ATG thread will have noted). perhaps not quite @Prince EWS level of dogmatism on the topic but maybe not that far off either.

Taking an extreme, dogmatist position that no-one really respects but all the same dragging people towards it, FTW.

Interesting, innit?

Early days but if Green able to forge a career, next few years will be especial viewing

McGrath though what a machine. Almost 550 wickets at 20!

Having a full career ****ing Tim Southee is probably worth more to >50% of teams throughout history than having Cummins play for this long though so he's got some work to do.
no i will swap thanks, and i say this as someone who has finally accepted southee has moved on from 2015-18

Sickos Haha Yes | Know Your Meme

if we're doing the Controversial Take Corner my contribution is that shane watson is the best genuine australian allrounder since keith miller, and unless and until he's unseated by green he would walk in to any aus side of the past five years and would deserve to
i always felt twatto was used wrong. if he got to bat at #6 in the traditional allrounder role and allowed to blast it like cairns or flintoff he'd be remembered much more fondly, and still have been very, very effective.

it sickens me to feel sorry for indian batsmen, but between the god level bowling today and the commentary that went with it (thanks shane), yea i felt for the fans.

warne really needs to shut up about hard dick pandya.

anyway it's crucial india find a couple of openers who can bat away from home because the middle order will sort itself out if they're not in early every knock. for the overall batting unit i guess when australia are pulling off one of their bowling spells you may as well embrace the #intent meme and slog them off their lengths. i do wonder whether batsmen getting circumspect against this unit just gets them mcgrathed/philandered.

Yeah this will be like the 47 and 64 type of games. We get hung up with numbers but even if we had say gotten away 5 more boundaries, nothing would have changed except we would have been bowled out for 56 instead of 36. The day should be treated as a freak occurrence and more work done on what we did right and wrong the previous two days coz I genuinely think we can compete in this series if we play properly and without having these odd sessions where we just go missing. Australia have a lot of problems of their own, especially with the batting. We should be thinking how we can beat them, not about a silly session where just about everything went against us. The better teams come back from such maulings, I hope we do too.

Baah.. who am I kidding? Its gonna be a painful 4-0. :(
The way India fielded would be seriously concerning as well though

A thousand times this. He was slated to bat six in the 06-07 Ashes series but wa a injured and Clarke came back into the side. Imagine he had a decent run kicking off his career surrounded by those blokes and was coming in at 4/300 or more most times. One of the great “what ifs” had he been able to play with freedom at six

I have to say, I am rather pleaaed with this result. This was no Bangladesh in Australia kind of collapse. This was much better.
This was India coming to Australia having comprehensively outbowled us, last time around. This was India who wobbled through the first innings against Australia's attack and then made it look feeble compared to their own attack. Our batsmen all looked clueless.
So it was vital that this time around, the bowling unit stood up and declared, 'we will not be bested'. The timing of it feels like such a big statement.
