Shannon didn't get his line right but at least he tried to do the right thing.

For me Jason has bowled a really ordinary spell here. It does look like the wind is challenging tbf, but with his record, he should be doing better.
If the wind is so bad then bat first? Holder is about as good with the toss decisions as he is with DRS

Very nicely poised now.

Both wicket balls were exactly right - just on a good length and moved appreciably off the seam.

Not sure I agree, there has been substantial movement off the pitch so far and with it sounding like these aren't conditions with the wind that will shock the Kiwi bowlers. Given the struggles of the batting and the movement and carry I don't blame Holder for backing his bowlers to adjust to the wind with the alternative trusting his batmsan on a pitch with significant movement.

Seeing some are calling for Holder's head as captain on Twitter not sure I agree with that - the alternative being offered up is Darren Bravo who isn't even sure of their spot at the moment - I hope he gets runs in Test cricket again but it sends a mixed message to me if on one hand we are saying we need 100s from Test batsman and on another handing the captaincy to someone who hasn't done much yet since returning to the Test team.

Massive test match for Joseph - if Holder can build on an impressive start could Joseph be in a bit of hot water. Great innings from Joseph in the last Test but I think it was Bishop who said earlier he's had good spells but not really taken a game by the scruff of the neck yet. Does average 38 which is a tad better then I thought he'd average - ideally he averages low 30s and grows from there as bowling in a struggling side whilst still new-ish to Test Cricket isn't easy.

That's an extreme of squaring up, even for Taylor. Nasty bit of seam movement though.

Young quite similar to Taylor in not wanting to get forward.

Can't remember the series, and this was a few years back, but there was a graphic which showed Gabriel for all intents and purposes bowled gun barrel straight. That’s certainly not the case anymore. Taylor getting cooked.

I often think the second hour of batting on NZ wickets is more dangerous and harder work than the second. Although the change in cloud cover and air temperature may have made a difference here.

It's really tough out there.

Around the wicket to Nicholls, similar to the approach against Latham, probably a good bet.

Tad worried about the over-rate here. New Zealand one partnership away from the spinners having to come on in the last session and potentially New Zealand fighting back from a potentially poor position to a dominant position

Agreed, though I'd give them a little leeway due to the wind and the constant need to put sand on the crease lines.

Chemar looks the real deal.

I reckon he is more skillful bowler than Alzarri...but Alzarri has more talent than him.

jayden seales on the other hand has more talent but is green as the basin reserve pitch

That is true although not an uncommon problem - Gabriel bowling so many of the overs a contributory factor as well (not a critcism as bowling really well after his poor first 2 or 3 overs). Would be interesting to have live over rates adjusted for delays as you don't want to end up bowling more fill-in overs of spin then necessary.

Not necessarily calling for it right this second but what are thoughts about Chemar Holder in the ODI setup? 2 and a bit years until next ODI World Cup and wickets have been an issue for the ODI side so would be nice to see him given a run in the nearish future, hitting the pitch hard and also has a good List A record already.

I genuinely think we need to experiment with our ODI and T20 bowling, so I'd be tempted to give him a go as well.
