im a bit concerned about guppy tbh. can't remember the last time he scored runs in any format or at any level.

disagree with the thread on seifert. he is a bit block bash in white ball cricket, but i've been impressed with his adaptability in red ball cricket and he obviously has a solid eye. just never let him keep wicket.
White ball cricket is what we’re talking about though. He might have a decent eye but he’s pretty easy to contain. Conway showed how he came in and commanded his own length, could pull short of a length but also hit down the ground effectively too. And Phillips is a cleaner striker than Seifert, not to mention probably a better keeper. Seifert might be a better red ball WK batsman but that role isn’t available

**** weather coming up today all over the country. It's been pouring here all night in Wellington. Probably a T10 game coming up today for the black caps.

Showers predicted all day and easing past afternoon but wondering why are we not playing under lights? Bay Oval has lights and it doesn't make sense to play a day game with showers predicted.
To be fair mate, the game wasn’t scheduled in the knowledge it was going to be wet. If it was played yesterday it would have been a belter, 25deg and hardly a breeze at the Mount

Fair enough but can't they move the timings now rather than play a cut short game? Probably the TV folks won't agree.

They really want that gap between the end of game 2 and the start of game 3 to be over 24 hours. Not sure if that's an official T20I regulation or just out of courtesy to the players.

Very docile bounce down there and no one shaping the ball into his pads, so why wouldn't Young have a feast.

Still 100 is a 100 no matter what. Coming for NZ A as well. Bodes well but this may keep Conway out of test side longer than I thought.

That would be a very unintelligent call, but it is NZ cricket we're talking about, so why wouldn't they overpromote an utterly unremarkable, interchangeable mediocrity like Young.

Someone who just ticks things along in a very passive way, someone who's never really seen picking up his own domestic team and taking them to the top of a mountain, but instead will just keep those juicy six-figure salaries hitting the bank accounts of middle-aged NZC mediocrities.

Phillips also has a better record than Seifert in all domestic formats/overseas t20 leagues. Although Seifert is getting quite some backing from Mccullum.

To be fair, Nicholls averaged like 30 for Canterbury, which barely warranted a spot, and he still managed to be a 40 average test player. Young hasn't looked out of depth against higher quality bowlers when he's had the chance (smashing Starc, Cummins around in Australia), and averaging 47 in the second half of his first-class career with 8 hundreds (4 times as many as the first half) is better than good. I think we are extremely lucky to have two players as good as Conway and Young in reserves. Either of them would be automatic picks in most other NZ teams in years past.

yea if you can watch young and not see that's he's ****in money you're becoming the wellingtonian version of a cantabrian. you'll be barracking for mitch drummond to make the all blacks again next. i didn't see you whining about the (pretty disgusting) deck last week when conway scored runs, or indeed this (pretty disgusting) deck until now when young passed 100.

conway is the better batsman provided he doesn't go all south african on us under the gun and become graeme hick, but young is going to have a good test career.

if pews algorithm pulling another philander meme is correct, conway is kane level (which would be funny and i hope it happens). that doesn't mean we still shouldn't select taylor or latham level talent.

Yeah of course. Conway could very well choke his guts out or that weakness we've seen against no-name spinners could become a big thing. It's the unwillingness to begrudgingly acknowledge that the exceptional performer (rather than these 'chup in, rarely dominate' performers) should get a first crack at it that irritates me.

Yeah I've got nothing again Young at all but finding out whether Conway really is one of the best batsmen in the world should be the priority, surely.

interesting you say this, and mike mentioned henry nicholls up the page. he seems a classic case of a guy who only realised he was quite decent, shovel technique and all, when he was elevated to test cricket.

I think NZ A does an amazing job year after year against sides that visit our chores. They just don't lie down and get rolled over. Yes they don't win any but they don't lose any either. Over the last 2-3 years they have made national sides and A sides toll for days. England, India, West Indies have all had their share of games vs NZ A and NZ A have staunchly stood up to the challenges. Fair bit of credit should be given to this team taking on national sides prior the main course starts.

Very surprising dropped catch.

Agree with others that Guptill hasn't been at his best for quite some time - bad world cup and has never quite regained form and dominance since then. He's 34, still has a couple of years left if he wants it and performs.

Young's dismissal to a throwdown from Braithwaite was bemusing - don't know how the ball ended up on the stumps.

In two minds on the Young/Conway test debate though I think there's a fair chance both will be playing tests for NZ from next summer anyway (probably one as opener). Concern with Young has always been the way he plonks forward/half-forward, may work at home but could be an auto-fail in Australia and South Africa, and we don't need more players who won't perform there.

Guptill looks very frustrated and like he could get out any ball. I don’t know if he’s ever really recovered from losing his test spot.
