Australia played SA more than anyone else in the 90s. Was terrific watching and in that era Jonte was supreme. Later, Ponting was better than Jonte had ever been though.
Ponting was definitely a better catcher, but other than that I don't think you can say that either was noticeably better than the other at any stage.

someone posts about the warne v jadeja thread ironically $1.50
h_hurricane posts about the warne v jadeja thread unironically $1.90
mods have to hand out warnings before page ten of this thread $2.50
burgey posts about the fabled subcontinent sense of humour being on full display in response to hb $3.00
migara says that murali was a better fielder than roy, jonty, and, jadeja, combined $11.00
The second I read this post I thought about the likelihood of a migara post about Mahanama and I was not disappointed as I continued reading.

Whatever it takes!!!
No he wasn't. He certainly wasnt in a "different stratosphere to literally every other fielder in the world"

Even if he was marginally better than Ponting, Symonds or Collingwood (or Harper, Viv and a few others), which I don't think he was personally, it's ludicrous exaggeration to state he was in a "different stratosphere". That's ridiculous.
See, if you wanna consider fielding in every position as some sort of benchmark for fielding, then none of these guys will cut the mustard compared to real allround fielders like Kapil, Botham, Sobers etc. who have all fielded anywhere and everywhere from the slips, to the circle and to the outfield and were brilliant everywhere.

If you just wanna compare how good fielders were wherever they fiedled, Jonty WAS in a different stratosphere to everyone of the guys you named. Like batsmen literally did not run if the ball went near him and even altered their strokes to avoid hitting to point every time and see him dive from nowhere and stop a certain boundary. I have seen runs being taken EASILY after being hit to all those fielders except Jonty. And there is a reason Jonty is the name that comes to any cricket fan when you say fielding, not the rest.

yeah... absolutely.

And also the fact that Rhodes was always well inside the circle, almost like a gully compared to any point fielder who stayed on the circle, was amazing. It is why he was able to cut angles better than any fielder in my time of watching.

Are you even aware of what you’re saying? It’s ridiculous. Completely ridiculous.
This is a subjective call here and neither of us have any numbers or other smoking guns to prove each other right/wrong.. And while I often disagree with your opinions, I always respect you enough as a poster that I feel I owe you an explanation.

I am not saying batsmen did not take easy singles to Jonty too. Every fielder has off days. But I have actually seen batsmen bat differently because of Jonty lurking at point and I have not seen that with any other team. Harris and Ponting and Collingwood are all excellent fielders, and in the case of the latter two, much more all-round as they could field in multiple positions and were excellent slip catchers too, which Jonty never was. But to me, Jonty made it clear that someone can stand out and influence games on their fielding alone and was far more consistently genius as a fielder than anyone I have ever seen.

One thing that people fail to take into account is that Symonds is a big dude

He’s 6’2” or so

Jonty, Ricky, Jadeja, etc are small guys & far easier to beat

Sri Lanka in the 90s were the first and only SC side to take fielding and fitness that seriously. I know it sounds stupid given they had Aravinda, Arjuna and Gurusinghe there but almost every other young player coming through was told very clearly that fielding and fitness standards were non-negotiable.

Same with Bangladesh during a period in the late noughties too. Defintiely think it is a Dave Whatmore thing more than anything else.
