Chris Gayle obvs the most over-rated thing in t20 history. Yes when he gets going after his slow starts he's great, but if he gets out like today, kills all momentum, a bat shouldn't help you win the odd game, but be instrumental in losing them too. Even his 99 last match was easily usurped by world-class players scoring quick from the off.

Reason why his teams don't actually win much, yes I am continuing my Chris Gayle is **** at T20 campaign, which has been on hold for a bit.
Absolute madness when you look at his record compared to literally everyone else who had ever played. Not sure how you can justify this line of thinking tbh, especially when he has been a fast starter this season.

Incidentally, I can't help but feel KXI have been robbed here with those two points against Delhi. Don't think a tournament like this should be as badly affected by an umpiring decision in this day and age.

I can justify it by how little he wins for his team, particularly when you consider how much he costs for respective teams, amazing individual records though.

Also he has won two T20 world cups

He’s got a great record. He’s a top class t20 player. Cricket is a team sport. If you hit 99 at a quick rate and lose then you look at your team mates as to why you lost not yourself.

Think 4 players on the other team hit at an higher rate, they were clearly better for their team. Universal Loser is my nickname for him, hope it catches on.

That also ignores dew and all sorts of other factors.

Which competitions have the likes of Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler won in T20 that warrant them being described as world-class in the format but Chris Gayle as the most overrated player in T20 history?

You mention the high price he attracts but surely that just recognises quite how good he is in the format. The players above would likewise attract high prices, if their franchises don't win it doesn't suddenly mean they are at fault if they are individually performing. That comment may have more been in reference to his career as a whole but he was bought for just 2 crore by KXIP, Stokes cost 12.5 crore and Buttler 4.4 crore for RR- they are the ones proving to be more of a burden on their team balance elsewhere thanks to their cost.

Also worth noting the impact of dew (I think his innings against RR was a very good but not necessarily great innings) and that he is 41 - and that at 41 he has come into the team and suddenly KXIP have started winning more games.

Few players match his consistency and few match his destruction over his career - his slow starts and his poor running means he has to be consistently destructive and he has been in his career, its the same reason he is no longer the automatic starter he was just a few years ago as his powers have waned and his slow starts and more importantly I think his lack of running between the wickets also hurt his team mates. But I think the benefits of such a great player in your team (looking at his T20 career as a whole) outweigh the costs by quite a distance.

not sure Ben Stokes or Jos Buttler have played in every season of the IPL without winning one, plus all the domestic t20 teams he's played, clearly the money paid to him has been wasted on result-wise, and spunking the money on him has denigrated those teams chances as they may have brought in a few non-wastrel signings with that money. Despite those two wonderful CPL wins in8 years played only 6 teams, Truly elite.

So we'll ignore the two world championships, 400 more sixes, 14 more centuries than anyone else, 3,000 more runs, highest ever individual score, quickest century etc? Really struggling to get my head around this tbh.

I understand many people not liking him due to his persona but to question his status as the greatest T20 bat of all time seems mad to me.

Hey ho, different strokes for different folks I guess

Do you feel the same about Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers as T20 players? - especially given the latter has a poor T20I record with neither winning the IPL? Stokes has played 4 seasons and not won an IPL, not won a T20 Blast, didn't win the BBL when he played for Melbourne Renegades. not won a World T20. If we are looking at the performance of sides Gayle is in as evidence of his personal ability and contribution (I personally think that's a bad metric) then we also have to look at that CPL record, there has been 8 editions he's played 7 editions and won twice. Probability suggests you'd win 1.16 recurring CPLs. So he's helped his franchise win 70% more CPLs than expected.

It's also not like RCB won an IPL either side of Chris Gayle's time there either - they've finished higher on average in the years he has been at RCB compared to the years he hasn't - RCB's experience of being able to use the money they were spending on Gayle on other options has seen a 6th placed finish and a bottom-placed finish in the past two seasons.

Whatever it takes!!!
Gayle is a great addition for any T20 team, and especially this year, is making a conscious effort to start faster. I think it is upto the sides how they want to use him. RCB wasted a top 4 of Gayle, Watson, Virat and AB. RR has been wasting a top 5 that contains Stokes, Buttler, Samson and Smith as well as a bowling attack led by Archer. I would rather blame the galaxybrain captaincy shenanigans of Virat and Steve Smith and their coaching staff for these failures. Not the respective line ups themselves, Gayle included.

I actually think the original top 4 will end up going through, but it is just gonna happen through the most convoluted route possible, lol.

CSK might beat KXIP today - will result in both of them stuck on 12 points.
KKR can beat RR today too - will put KKR on 14 and RR will also finish on 12.
MI should beat SRH later on- will put SRH out at 12 too and MI will go 20.
DC Vs RCB will become a play off for the #2 slot.

Will finish the league stage with a team on 20, another on 16, 2 on 14 and 4 on 12.
