The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

The normal awards that everyone else has
well i can sort of see why given that half of that sample weren't very important tests, although that basically means the judgment of Gillespie's career hinges on McGrath not stepping on a ball in the warmup in 2005 which seems unfair
My argument isn't whether the tests were "important tests", it's whether Gillespie "went missing" without McGrath.

And yeh, he was poor in 2005, and was rightly dropped. McGrath or not, he was basically done as a force by 2005.

he really isn't. not only can he not bat away from home, he also can't catch away from home.

a criminally underrated aussie would be chris rogers or simon katich. shane watson too.
There aren't too many keepers who could take over from Gilchrist so seamlessly. His batting rescued Australia a number of times, which is all you can really ask of a keeper.

Haddin was a better cricketer before he played for Australia IMO. His peak coincided with Gilchrist's and by the time he took over in 2008 he was already on the decline. If he hadn't been made to wait so long I reckon he would have retired well before 2015 when he actually did.

despite that he was still one of the best WK/bats Aus have ever had

With 5 right arm seamers (I'm including Kallis there), I'd drop one of Imran, Marshall, or McGrath (as a Kiwi I can't drop Hadlee) and play Warne.

Also is Barry Richards considered in the past 50 years (WSC and other fc)? He should be ahead of Greenidge.

Needs a left armer, might get in Wasim for Hadlee since McGrath can be considered somewhat similar to the role Hadlee did.

I really don't like your 2nd XI.

For that matter I don't like Teja's 1st either.

1st XI:

Gavaskar
Richards
Ponting*
Smith
Lara
Kallis
Gilchrist+
Imran
Hadlee
Marshall
Murali

Vs

Hayden
Greenidge
Sangakkara
Tendulkar
Border
Waugh
Dujon+
Warne
Garner
Ambrose
McGrath

Both are stronger batting lineups. Tendulkar doesn't beat Smith at 4 and refuses to bat elsewhere so he's in the 2nd XI.

I considered Warne+McGrath over Hadlee+Murali but the latter is a better combo with the bat. I could have batted Warne at 11, but that seems like overkill when he would be more valuable batting 8 in the 2nd XI.

Imran IMO plays as a bowler or not at all. I don't need a second dinky 20 overs a match bowler given I already have Kallis.

Akram, Donald and Pollock both particularly unfortunate not to make the second XI.

Didn’t we just have a Barry Richards shouldn’t be in test XI’s argument a few pages ago?
