yeah so the act doesn't specifically criminalise "coward punches" (king hits or one punch assaults or whatever you want to call them), the scope is assault causing the death of the other guy

now what the problematic part of that reform is, is that it also forces judges to impose a mandatory sentence of at least eight years if you're intoxicated and you fall foul of the assault causing death provision of the act - and to me mandatory minimums are a disgusting legislative overreach and a constraint on judicial power with next to no legitimacy; the parliament shouldn't be sentencing offenders because they are not judges, but that's what this is; the upshot of a glib law and order dirge in the public rallied by the usual suspects in the media and in the state parliament back to the o'farrell years and continuing today
