Bored of the Archer convo now. I just don't see why you wouldn't pick him if he's fit. Bloke's a long-term prospect who needs game time, and keeps getting results.

I mean he took 4/86 and people are bemoaning a poor game. He just takes wickets, keep picking him.

Judging by the tone of the thread, you'd think he took 0/150. It's so strange.

Genuinely think an Ollie Robinson dayboo is on the cards. Why would the English selectors pull him from Sussex duties if he wasn't in genuine contention to play?

Just listened to Woakes being interviewed on Five Live. Such a nice bloke, as we all knew. But also so refreshing in what he didn't say. No nonsense about his performance 'proving people wrong', even when fed lines by the interviewer that could have taken him down that route. He didn't even have any truck for 'unappreciated' line of thought, when the interviewer offered that one. Again, I'm choosing to partially credit that to the culture within the England set-up, but obviously Woakes is a gent anyway.

He does get some criticism, justifiably so in my eyes, but he is still young and still learning and his talent is obvious for all to see, he’s not going to be the finished article yet. However his 4-for in the last Test did include the wickets of Yasir Shah, Mohammad Abbas and Naseem Shah, so they weren’t exactly prized victims, with all due respect.

I don't think Bhuveneshwar is close to as good a batsman as Woakes, but a very comparable bowler, I'll give you. Has quite an English swing out / seam in style.

It's not so much the butterfly effect which is a problem -- otherwise you'd never be able to decide on anything because how do you know that not taking a wicket prevented some incredible confluence of circumstances that led to the next batsman scoring a run-a-ball hundred or something like that -- but the psychological effect on the rest of the team, which is quite real. The keeper sets the tone for the entire team, a bad keeper will degrade the overall quality of the whole fielding and bowling effort and make it harder to maintain an high intensity level because the bowler cannot trust that most basic of constants: that the keeper will catch the ball.
feels good to have spark agree with my general point rather than being utterly destroyed by the superior rhetorical power he possesses tbh
Huge myth.
something to talk about in the next commentary stint - my evidence is purely anecdotal tbf though i imagine there is a large amount of confirmation bias

Speaking of horses for courses seamers Ollie Robinson has been called up. Hope he gets a chance, seems pointless to call him up otherwise.

Would be a much better replacement than Wood. I was sold on him over the away cycle but he's not really worth the punt in England

its because he's right arm fast medium who very sporadically graduates to 150kph and he's selected to provide that every time. his head also drops at the sight of remotely unfriendly conditions.

the frustration is understandable. he's still englands best change bowler option though. getting wickets bowling 130kph is success and fans/selectors need to let go of the idea he's this speed demon.* mark wood isn't in his league.

*could see him doing a johnson at some stage though
this is just complete shite though isn't it.

I think he suffers from the Mark Waugh effect to the extent his peak performance looks so effortless that he can look disinterested when he's off the boil. I haven't seen greater "apparent" drop-offs in intensity from a talented post-00s bowler, but maybe that's just an illusion.

Dan Lawrence not available for selection for the 2nd Test following a family bereavement. Sad for him, he may well have been considered for a debut.

nope. threw the biggest sook of all the sooks at mt maunganui and hamilton.

the third seamer needs to accdpt his lot in life of doing the hard work with no new ball like the glory boys yet. comprehensively toasted by his opposite that series.
