Woakes still a mistake at 7,unbelievable 8 though. Had a **** patch but has always had class. I'd go Lawrence as I've seen enough of Crawley, not got the technique yet.

Buttlers found something with the bat so keep him in the side as a 6. He’s not a test keeper, he’s just not. Foakes takes the gloves.

Also we seem to have developed a nice habit of winning tight matches.
45 tests with 1 ton @ 32 avg (to go with a similarly modest FC record) suggests he’s not a reliable number 6 bat either. Today’s inning proves to the detractors that he’s capable of playing knocks of occasional brilliance that few other WKs (even around the world) can play in test match cricket (one can possibly argue the same about Bairstow). However, if he is to play in this side, it really has to be as a WK bat which means that he will need to figure out a way to improve with the gloves. I guess this just kicks the can down the road for now.

Don’t give a damn what he did 45 tests ago. Today, yesterday, last week, right now he is in the top few England batsman, certainly ahead of any other bat that would be brought in.

He’s having trouble catching the ball though so he shouldn’t be a WK.

this argument makes no sense unless you base decisions based on a sample size of one inning.

Try to live in the moment TEC, one of the greatest counter-attacking partnerships of all time in Tests, we aren't dropping him.

Someone who's missed every stumping chance he's ever had as well as plenty of catches shouldn't be the first choice keeper either. Keep Woakes at 7 and get Foakes in at 8 but a decent keeper should be a priority.

This is 2020 FFS not 1980........you dont play a specialist keeper in the modern game. End of.

If you agree with that or not is a separate argument but Foakes is not getting in this side unless he can realistically be expected to contribute with the bat.

It's not like he's completely ****. He's capable but out of form. Worth sticking with. The difference in keeping is simply too big to ignore.

Anyway, nice to see Woakes receive the accolades he deserves, so often in the shadow if others, but on front and back pages today, top bloke.

i know this was probably discussed during our tour to SL a couple of years ago, but got to hand it to some of the players and coaching staff in recognizing the value of the reverse sweep in the longer format. Whilst, I’ve generally felt that most good players of spin have also been adept at sweeping conventionally, the reverse sweep is such a valuable addition as a positive scoring option against spin particularly as a way to disrupt set fields.

I thought Root, Stokes and Buttler all demonstrated this to good affect today against Yasir and Shadab whereas some of our teams in past years would have cowered on this kind of surface.

That’s awesome. I was kinda worried Buttler would outscore him by like 10 and the media would just be focusing on him completely. Throughout that partnership the commentators kept saying Woakes was supporting him.

Seems like one of the nicest guys in cricket, which is obviously why Burgey dislikes him since they seem to adore dickheads down there.
