Feel for Buttler. Can't be easy being regarded as the best/most revolutionary player in your nation's ODI history and then failing to make anything like the same contribution in the longer format. Tried his damndest here, didn't even play a particularly bad shot to get out, but an innocuous innings still at the end of it, just like his Test career.
That is a very fair summary. The ODI side looked so much poorer without him. He is utterly amazing there, I only hope the test experience won't damage that going forward. I love Buttler the player but really think he needs to be released from tests now.

I honestly think he has to trust his stroke play more in tests and try and do the job that Ed Smith and company seem to expect from him. I mean, its not even a secret, they openly said that in media interviews for a while now. And yet Jos is all "nah, its cool, I will bat properly in tests". It is what would have happened with Sehwag if he tried to bat properly in tests. When you have more chances of success off an attempted scoring shot than an attempted defence, it is obvious why anyone will pick you in a test side these days.

I don't know if Buttler has been that bad with the bat. I think he's made 30 odd at the very least each time he's batted with the exception of that one innings he was asked to open and score quickly.

Ive said it before, if you absolutely want to shove Buttler into a test side, make him play in ODI mode like Gilchrist. If he gets out playing attacking shots, so be it, just back his game ffs. If they want a proper keeper batsman, just pick someone else and get on with it. If hes played 40 tests and hasnt shown any indication of being capable of playing a good counterattacking knockof like 70 odd, then he is pointless as a test cricketer.

Yeah but fair to say you expect a little more from someone of his pedigree. Especially considering he can't go on for much longer as a keeper and that if he plays it has to be as a specialist batsman.

It was a decent #7 cameo but his test career so far has been neither here nor there. The 30s don't make up for the poor keeping and vice versa.

Depressing to compare this to the post-lunch session yesterday. Pakistan have been so much better than us in all departments.
And if Yasir's doing this now, I dread to think how we'll fare in the 4th innings.

That is the issue though. They have made it clear that is what they expect of him. Seems it is he himself who wants to bat this way. Which is stupid especially from a guy who is supposed to be one of the leaders of the ODI team.

England would've lost without his knock here imo - https://www.google.com/search?q=ind...-8#sie=m;/g/11f54h_vlp;5;/m/021q23;cms;fp;1;;

Yasir's got some good purchase from the pitch. They need Pakistan to splinter to 47 allout or something to have any chance.

So why is Yasir bowling with more topspin, a somewhat slower pace, and with more variation now? Does it really take a whole tour averaging 100 to peg that this may be a good idea?

Yup, there's no way Foakes is a test number 6. If and when he comes into the side we'll need a rethink about the structure of the team.
Stokes should be good to bowl next match you would hope, not that they will drop Buttler before the end of the series anyway.
