Im not normally one to be screaming for bold declarations but England have to risk losing here in order to win IMO. Second new ball could be vital so we want 90 overs at them.

98 overs scheduled for the day yes? Does that account for the change of innings?

Assuming 94 overs of actual play (including the changeover after the 3rd innings), England would want at least 5 overs with the 2nd new ball. So they have around 8-10 overs of batting left IMO. But if they aren't well past 260 by then, they'll probably be reluctant to declare, which will play into WI's hands.

I don't think so, will lose 2 overs for change of innings. Only 96 overs available.

If they set 260 they won't get to bowl 84 overs.

I think barring rain there will be a conclusive result for sure, just have no idea in which teams favour. Think the draw looks highly unlikely, can't see play just petering out gently at all

Whatever it takes!!!
Can't see England declaring before being at least 280 ahead, maybe even 300. It could be tough to make those runs in 8 overs. But if the day is 98 overs long, they can still take about 11 overs for these runs and still get 85 overs at Windies. 300 in 85 is a tempting chase from the Windies PoV too.

I think HZ means there will be a result prior to the 2nd new ball if they set that score.
Maintaining >3 RPO for 80 overs on day 5 will be a tall order. Yesterday they got to the 2nd new ball only 4 down (including a brisk cameo from Joseph) and yet only had around 240 on the board.

In other words... 3 an over. And that’s without a target.

If the run rate set is close to 3rpo then England will have to set fields to stop boundaries, and be less likely to take the wickets.

Yeah it would be terrible. Leaving the Windies 80 overs to chase an achievable target could create some serious head noise if they start well

I wonder how the Windies approach their bowling and fields. If they get Stokes early you feel that it becomes much more difficult for England to get those extra hundred runs or do they just go ultra defensive and slow everything down

Pretty sure WIs will go ultra defensive from ball 1. Stokes should be fine unless he holds out in the deep.

Stokes is the perfect batsman for us to try and score quickly this morning, not just because he can clear the boundary but as we know his game management is excellent and he’ll take calculated risks and run hard for the two’s. If we can get enough runs in 8-10 overs then we should pull out then with hopefully a lead of around 280+. I’m sure Root will want the chance of a few overs with the second new ball if required, expect an exciting day ahead providing the weather plays it part!

I'm frequently wrong, but I'd be very, very surprised if we pull the plug with anything short of a 300 lead. In fact, 320-330 would be my guess.

I agree that declarations these days invariably err on the side of caution, but if we want to win this series we need to risk losing it in order to give us the time and opportunity to bowl WI out today and having the option of a second new ball for a few overs is a nice safety net. 280 should be more than enough.
