Tbh, taken as a whole I'd say his test career has been acceptable but nothing special (I think a lot of people have unrealistic expectations of wicketkeeper-batsmen in general these days), but this should probably be it for him
I'd agree but I think it's 'taken in isloation' rather than 'taken as a whole', because Buttler is clearly exceptionally good at hitting a ball with a stick and his returns in his second best format really should not be as mediocre as they are.

Hey i need cricketwebs decision judiciary feelings on this, am I being a knob here, or is minor Northern local radio sleb Darren Lethem being one.

Or maybe we both are knobbery maybe the one constant ane ever growing component of civilisation as we know it.

Think he has a not bad point that expecting Foakes to do better because he's got a better FC average is flawed, especially considering that his last FC season wasn't all that. I think there are better reasons to pick Foakes than his county record. Without consulting any lists, I think you could probably find a lot more players who were brilliant for their county but disappointed in Tests, than players were brilliant in ODIs but disappointent in Tests.

Neither of you really disagree all that hard so it's a bit moot.

I just think he should know that it was Grecian who started the Buttler appreciation thread.

Admittedly has it is not best thread of that kind that he has made but still.

It is rather only one of my points though, it's one of a number, look again I don't dislike Jos just think Foakes deserves a run, and deserved it before.

Still love the guy, just as a one day player, he's a genius let him just concentrate on that, but admittedly neither Foakes or Buttler can compare to the god that is Ravi.

It's a weird one isn't it and part of the greatness of Test cricket, if Wood and Archer bowl at their lightening best and take 5 apiece, which they are capable of, then our criticism will seem a tad silly, I am hoping to look a tad silly, not over 'til it's over.

Very proud of our bowlers, they were absolutely superb. If we can find a couple of decent batsmen who can average 40 we will be competitive against anyone now.

Shame that even with this position I can see us collapsing on the last day. Hope I'm wrong. Either way, can't complain so far, we've been the better side and given ourselves a good chance to win a test in England at the start of a series. Definite progress being made.

How has Denly lasted this long in the side
Because he's done a job in a position that no one else wants and have performed horribly in. We should definitely be looking to move on from Denly in the immediate future, but he's honestly done a respectable, albeit altogether mediocre job at number 3 that partly contributed to our success in SA, whilst there have not really been any inspiring no.3 batsmen from county cricket to demand his place

On the wicket-keeper debate, I’m a huge admirer of Jos Buttler, I think his batting contains the type of x-factor and skill that deserve perseverance if things aren’t quite going to plan. Each time he purposely strides out you just hope you’re about to witness an innings that very few batsman can play, and for 20 runs or so you maintain that hope but more often than not it’s brought to a premature end with a tame dismissal from a player fighting his natural instinct and trying be that orthodox Test batsman he thinks he should be.

The reality is he’s not delivering anywhere near consistently enough for a man of his ability, we have Ben Foakes who is undeniably a far superior gloveman (someone I enjoy just watching keep wicket), and also happens to be averaging over 40 in Test cricket. Yes he was below par last county season and that certainly hasn’t helped his case but surely he deserves his shot again in Test cricket.

Bairstow will come again aswell, maybe as just a batsman, but his Test average while keeping since January 2019 is 18, that doesn’t scream re-selection.

Let’s get the best gloveman back in the Test side and someone that can actually play a key role with the bat, he won’t be the swashbuckling strokemaker that both Bairstow and Buttler can be but he certainly has the capability to play a BJ Watling type role for us, and he averages just under 40 and is hugely important in tough situations for NZ.

Disappointed not to have seen any play last night. Looks like this will potentially be a cracking finish.

As always in these situations, I?m backing a tie. So it?ll probably then come down to who?s hit the most boundaries to decide it.

If they aren?t going to pick Foakes they?d be better off with Bairstow than Buttler. Sure he?s been terrible in the past year or so but at least he?s actually made test runs.

Buttler just isn?t up to it at all as a batsman at this level, and the glove work of the two of them is as average as each other

Edit: is anyone else seeing apostrophes as question marks in their posts since the server change?

I don?t think it is because I?m using my phone and the mobile skin, and I think it?s largely autocorrecting the apostrophes in.

Thanks though

Edit: same in this post. Very odd.
