Not really part of this thread, but 10 of the 29 Pakistan squad players have tested positive for Covid. I'm struggling to agree with the PCB that the tour is on track to go ahead.

Reifer took his 5-fer in 11 deliveries.

He did look tidy on debut (holy **** how was that nearly 3 years ago!!?), even if nothing spectacular. Maybe he can be a bit of a CdG for the WI if a spot opens up.

Keon Harding injured, seems like a Sunil Ambris pull might burst through his hands and clipped him on the head.

Yikes, hope he's ok.

Definitely! Just please not at the expense of Rakheem the dream. I know what our management are like, any excuse not to play a specialist spinner!

before judging the batting, what are these decks like? at least they're getting their learning experiences in before the real stuff.

not the worst idea to have a trolltastic medium pacer who hoops it even under bright sunny skies. where would he fit?

Reifer probably would bat just behind Holder I would imagine. Not sold on him as a longterm option, but for English conditions I really think Reifer could be pretty handy

Rakheem bowling 10 overs 0/55 is giving them more ammunition.... come on Jimbo, get it together.

Good partnership of 131 from Dowrich and Brooks though, which is promising. Braithwaite, Campbell, Hope, Brooks and Dowrich have all had a decent knock. Need Chase to get runs in the 4 dayer also.

i really want another legendary fat person in test cricket again so rakheem needs to deliver here.

can he catch? acrobatic fat people are the best fat people. someone needs to slip between jesse ryder in gully/point and dwayne leverock at first slip.

He is an excellent slip fielder, he has giant hands and........ covers a lot of ground, shall we say.......

He should be an automatic pick but I know how they work, any excuse to play all the seamers and they will jump at it, particularly Jason Holder. Against India on a turning surface they thought playing Miguel Cummins ahead of him was a great idea.

The BBC have been showing highlights from some standout England vs WI games to whet our appetites for this series; Lord's in 1984, Headingly in 1991, Old Trafford in 1995 and Lord's in 2000. Obviously I binge watched the lot in one go on iPlayer.
Watching the 1984 match, I was trying to work out who Graeme Fowler reminds me of. May not even be a cricketer, but he's the spitting image of some one and it's giving me a headache trying to work out who. Other than that, I'd forgotten about Gatting's habit of being LBW without playing a shot , and that Botham did actually have one good game against the Windies. Greenidge's 2nd innings double to chase down 340 in five hours or so was astonishing of course.
1991 was a chance to enjoy highlights of Gooch's batting masterclass again. And a reminder of how promising Ramprakash had looked on debut; two wonderful pieces of fielding and tidy innings in tough conditions. Shame he never did kick on.
1995 was all about Cork's hat-trick, a typically brilliant hundred from Lara and an under-rated knock from Jack Russell when we looked like making a mess of chasing a small target. Cork's hat-trick was the first I'd seen by an England cricketer. I think I've now seen six if we include ODIs.
2000 was the 54ao match and England eventually chasing down 188 against world class bowling from Ambrose and Walsh not least due to Cork's batting cameo at the death.

Anyone else been watching these?

Joe Root opting out of the First Test because his baby might be born during it.
Sibley, Burns, Crawley and Denly must be our least experienced top 4 in ages. About 30 caps between them?
Maybe increases the likelihood of Ali and Woakes getting two of the bowling spots.

Reckon it increases the chances of James Vince getting a game.

It also significantly increases the chances of England losing.

These effects may not be unrelated.

Hopefully it only increases Vince's chances from virtually zero to extremely slim. Denly batted at 4 last summer didn't he, or am I making that up?

Can't argue with your second point though. Or your third, of course.

A couple of times, but only with Root at three.

I'd probably play Bairstow for one game and maybe move Pope. 4-6 of Stokes-Bairstow-Pope in some order isn't too bad.

Crawley is 21, he's not going anywhere.
