Also really do not like the England kit used in this match. Remember quite liking it at the time, but there is something about the numbering/lettering that looks really goofy/dated.

Mind you, England away kits are almost always horrible. Watched the highlights of the England v Sweden game from 2012 straight after, and the kit worn in that game was horrid as well. Fitting for a really horrid England side I suppose.

The other striking thing about England Croatia is that England were quite good and fun to watch, which I’d completely forgotten. That group of players under Sven got a raw deal.

Think 2006 largely conditions the way the Sven era is viewed. It was the highest expectation I can remember for an England team going into a World Cup and from memory they were really turgid the whole way through.

2004 was a tournament England could definitely have won.

Did Campbell not have another goal disallowed against Portugal?

Yeah this is a really good summary of it.

He did.

If Rooney hadn't got injured you'd have to think we make the final at least, though obviously this is a pointless bit of speculation

May even have made it if Sven had brought on Heskey instead of Vassell (or more or less anyone who wasn't Vassell actually) as Rooney's replacement imo.

Was it JT playing the Shearer role by fouling the keeper?

Might need to rewatch that one. Actually had a lot of drama but it's blurred in my head with the properly dire 0-0 in 2006.

Sheaerer didn't foul the 'keeper though, hideously officiated match that.

Anyway, should think McGinn is in so many peoples Fantasy teams it's ridiculous. Such a surreal feel to this, just want the match on.

Pleased to see Barrow confirmed as being promoted back into the Football League. Their relegation in 1972 was unjust and came about primarily on the back of Hereford beating Newcastle in the FA Cup. Relegation in those days was decided by a vote amongst the other teams and didn’t happen every year. The bottom four all had to scrounge around for votes. Barrow were the only team relegated even though they finished third from bottom. Not sure such a system could exist in today’s lawsuit culture.

Quite apt that a team who was voted out returns this year...

Pleased for them. Stadium will need some significant work over the next year or two I think.

I heard the tail end of a discussion on the radio about next season. I don't know if it's actually under discussion anywhere or if they were just throwing ideas around. But the basic premise was that each team in a division plays each other once and then the division splits into two halves and each half plays each other again. In the Premier League it would mean a 28 game season. I assume it would be a one off to allow for a shorter season. It sounds daft enough to be Scottish.
