Fast Bowler Survival - 2020 edition

Line and Length

Cricketer Of The Year
Another bowler who, perhaps, should have been included was Peter Heine.
He and Neil Adcock formed a lethal pair and Heine's 5 for 60 in his debut at Lords (1955) included the wickets of May, Graveney, Compton, Barrington and Evans.
He also took 6 for 58 against Australia at Wanderers (1957).
He finished with a very respectable average of 25.08
He is probably overlooked as he only played 14 Tests.

missed it. agree with most of it.

but is this for first class cricket?

I see the seven test wonder Procter ranked above Beefy who took 27 five fers all over the world for several years and also held the world record for maximum wickets. this ranking must be for first class cricket, right?

There's a lot of conjecture about how good he was thrown in the mix here.

Ultimately it's a snapshot of how the current voting population of cricketweb view the players.

between 1977 and 1981, for five years, beefy was an explosive bowler. more effective than Roberts, holding, lillee, imran and hadlee. marshall was yet to make his mark. at that point, he was arguably the best bowler in the world having already surpassed Barnes, Davidson and Hall in their overall tally, and Truman in five wicket hauls in twenty fewer tests at a superior average. He had taken 160 wickets more than Procter, and 17 more five wicket hauls. This actually happened!!! No one needed to extrapolate a small sample and imagine a great career for him, as people are doing for Procter. Proctor is no match for Botham in test cricket. Purely as a bowler he should be in the top 20. above Shaun Pollock.

The big problem with Botham is the whole other decade of his career afterwards.

If only he'd kept the weight off.

Whatever it takes!!!
Didn't he play a whole bunch of unofficial and rebel tests as well as for World XI etc in the Packer series? I am pretty sure he has some great stats there which is basically unsanctioned international cricket, and in the case of the World XI, perhaps a notch higher.

Never played test cricket in Perth, Lord's, Bombay.... Never bowled to Viv Richards, Sunny Gavaskar or Greg Chappell... Never toured a new country for months and adapted to different conditions... Never bowled in the heat of Barbados and the dust of Delhi.... Totally unworthy of being in this discussion...

Spoffoth came in at 22 and he didn't play many tests at all. Bedser came in at 21 and he was a home track bully and had a terrible away record.

Sometimes our opinions don't align with others'.

Procter played in two series

TWO

Spofforth was the highest wicket taker of his time. Bedser too was at the top of the tree during his playing days.

This guy played in two test series.

TWO

And he didn’t even take 50 wickets. Not even 50

True. But that doesn’t mean we have to agree with the others.
This list is fine for first class cricket. But if it is for tests, then a guy who played seven tests being ranked above a 100 test veteran is laughable.
