Best English bowling attack

Bit like the West Indian quartet having little overlap at their best.

That attack, however, managed to beat an exceptionally strong West Indian team at home. Trueman played all 5 tests, Bailey played 4, Statham, Laker and Lock each played 3.

Based on performance, Trueman-Statham-Bailey-Wardle appears to be the best attack. Got an innings victory in that 2nd test. Laker, Appleyard, Lock and Wardle all kept getting rotated and pacers get injured so it's hard to pick 1 actual combo that did well from that era. Would need a serious archive trawling effort.

The England Team that took the field against Australia at Edgbaston in 1902 has been regarded as the best England team that has ever taken the field.

England 376-9 Dec, Australia 36 & F.O 46-2, Drawn, Rain.

The bowling attack was, F.S Jackson, Hirst, Rhodes, Jessop, Lockwood & Braund.
The rest of the team was MacLaren, Fry, Ranjitsinhji, J.T Tyldesley & Lilley (WK).

That bowling attack never took the field again.

Did that attack play together much?

We’re often guilty of ‘remembering’ eras without considering any real series. The 1958 team went to Australia as heavy favourites and got beat

They all played in 4 matches, curiously, all of them were drawn (in 4 different series in which England drew a total of 5 matches).
1953-4: 4th Test v WI at Port-of-Spain (WI 681-8d and 212-4d, E 537 and 98-3)
1957: 1st Test v WI at Birmingham (E 186 and 583-4d, WI 474 and 72-7)
1958: 5th Test v NZ at The Oval (NZ 161 and 91-3, E 219-9d)
1958-9: 3rd Test v Aus at Sydney (E 219 and 287-7d, A 357 and 54-2)

There were another 17 matches in which 4 of them played. The other principal England bowlers of this era were Loader, Tyson and Appleyard; Trueman, Loader, Bailey, Laker and Lock played together in 4 wins out of 4, though they were all home Tests and 3 were against the weak NZ side of 1958.

I guess the 2011 attack is underrated for 2 reasons:

1.) Too recent to inspire a feeling of nostalgia.
2.) Did not inspire the same emotions as the 2005 attack.

Other than that, this seemed to be a better bowling line up than 2005 one where they relied too much on reverse swing. Broad and Anderson duo in 2010-2015 period were top class.

I've watched clips of his bowling and while he looked really good, he wasn't vastly superior to Tim Bresnan in top form who too was getting reverse swing at 87-90 mph against Australia and India.
Bresnan became a medium pacer when he bowled in India later, a bit like Simon Jones he could not maintain his prime for too long.

And Flintoff only had few great years as an ELITE bowler. Harmison never was that good. Neither was Hoggard.




But.. The combination of Anderson and Broad in Test cricket took England to a different dimension. They are the two greatest Test bowlers, in general. Numbers don't lie

Then add in Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes to the mix.. that's the most powerful English bowling line up of all time. Most COMPLETE, with tons of great options.

Then there's the likes of Curran, Woakes and a **** ton of insanely good bowling all rounders. Jesus.. Completely STACKED


Only weakness is a specialist spinner.. They got none


Rashid is GREAT in ODIs, but not good enough in Tests. Leach is inconsistent. Moeen Ali is a batsman who bowls part time. Inconsistent too


That's the only thing they been lacking.. A great spinner for Tests, and of course.. a great Opener

Broad is the only ATVG/ bordering on a Pommie great in that attack. Anderson dies in the arse away, Archer puts in around 40% of the time, and as we all know, Stokes should be watching proceedings from a 6x4 foot cell in Pentonville Road Gaol.

these men are on the money. can't be calling a medium pacer who can't average less than colin de grandhomme with a kookaburra a great english bowler surely.
