Khawaja is a class opener and has played 2 atg knocks in that position but at the end of the day he had been in horrible form for a while, minus his 100 vs a piss poor, demoralized sri lanka, he'de made no runs since the uae, and if khawaja was coming in 5-1/10-2 in the ashes consistently and failing what insentive do the selectors have to let him open, in no way did they botch things.
yes they did because Bancroft never should have been dropped after two tests given the circumstances (that is, no reason to believe Harris is better, reason to believe Smith would miss only one test, Usman clearly being better than both Bancoft and Harris)

England was by far the single worst place to try to reintegrate Bancroft, bar none. Putting aside the circumstances and the crowd, it was never bright to put him in against an attack that had the wood on him in their previous meeting

Really he was being set up for failure right from the very start

Burns should have been selected for that tour period instead of wasting our time with Bancroft. His fatigue syndrome aside. I recall the justification for it didn't even make sense.

Not that he would have done any better necessarily, but at least Joe would never got caught at leg gully something like 6 times in a row.

What was the reaaon for burns non selection? He made runs vs sri lanka on recall and made a 100 or 2 for aus a over in england if im correct. Frankly a massive ****up no matter how you look at it.

I think he's just not that highly rated amongst certain selectors.

In fairness to them, he probably would've struggled over there. In fairness to him, he deserved the shot and wouldn't have done any worse than the openers selected.

Khawaja has never been given a decent run as an opener in tests which surprises me because he clearly goes better when opening.
Would Khawaja be a decent opener? Potentially. But I'm certainly not upset that he's cards have been marked. When asked to stand up while Steve and Warner were banned he went missing aside from one knock in the UAE. He's a soft player with terrible body language on the field

The funny thing is that aside from Smith, Khawaja has played the most memorable knocks of any Australian player. Truly a rocks and diamonds type of player.

Strange innit, there was such a big deal with that UAE Tour with him getting fitter and losing all that muscly chunk he had built on since going to QLD. That paired with the results, you'd almost think that would be a crucial moment in his career.

I still think he could open tbh and do no worse than anyone else. But I think his roof could be higher than any of the current candidates in that position (Warner aside obvs). As Shaun Marsh has shown, no one's ever REALLY gone.

But the young man Shaun Marsh is a Langer favourite and should therefore be given more matches.

Rumour is that Cricket Victoria is on its last legs financially with mass redundancies & major cuts to junior programs plus 2nd XI being mooted

Bancroft should never have been selected.
I don't disagree, but since they made the decision that Bancroft was better than Harris (prior to the start of the Ashes) it was an absurd decision to drop him two test later for Harris, particularly once you add the context of someone having to be dropped for the fourth test for Smith (and the inevitably of the worst selection doctrine being used: you can't drop someone after one test). Things should have been left alone since they was no reason for them to believe Harris would outperform Bancroft since they literally just said Bancroft was better than Harris, and then Bancroft could have been dropped for Smith and Usman moves up and that's a much better set up for everyone. This was an insanely obvious thing to do and as I recall I was droning on about it then and there.

And I think the main reason why I droned on about is because the exact same thing happened in 2013, with Usman on the other side of it. Cowan got dropped for the 2nd test for Usman, with Warner set to return for the 3rd test. This meant Smith or Hughes had to be dropped for the 3rd test for Warner, because Usman couldn't be dropped (see: you can't drop someone after one test), so Hughes got the chop after a self made selection crunch. Cowan should have stayed in, and Warner comes in for Cowan for the 3rd test and Usman stayed out.

(This, to be clear, is going back to my original claim that they botched the handling of Usman/Bancroft in the Ashes, and not that, based on how things have gone since then, Usman should remain a contracted player)

yeah harris should never have gone over in the first place... harris is an awful test batsman full stop and in england was always going to fail there on account of the swinging ball
