Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

It's the triple stitching of the dukes that keeps it together. Kookaburra should try to change their machining to do that.

Actually it's possible that kookaburra's machining is the real problem. When you do things by hand, some imperfections are to be expected, which would lead to movement. Maybe the kookaburra balls are too perfect to allow for swing. Though that doesn't explain how poorly they deteriorate.
I remember when Kookas were hand stitched and they were things of beauty

It's not imperfections that make the ball swing, it's the seam, and Kookaburras have a very flat seam with thinner string. The Dukes seam has slightly thicker string and stands (or at least used to until the ECB got their noses into things last year) much prouder. The triple stitching creates that proudness by gathering the leather together, and will also hold it tighter to the twine underneath. However I think hardness more depends on how tightly the twine is wound around the cork core.

As for why they wear faster, it's an odd one that has been debated for years. The Kookaburras are usually a lighter colour and wear faster, then the white balls wear much faster again. It seems like different colourations affect the leather's durability somehow. Interestingly cricket is not the only place I've seen this come up, I've seen people comment that white motorcycle leathers are abraded significantly more easily than black in a crash. I have black-and-white gear but I'm not going carry out a (intentional) comparative study. Sorry.

Actually, on the 'imperfections make the ball swing' thing, I played a couple of times with someone who had the theory that the ball would swing towards the smaller side. I have seen some quite noticeably lopsided new balls, but never gotten the chance to test the theory out (didn't get the new ball much due to something-lack of accuracy-something).

Worth watching the documentary I linked earlier. Pretty much all of the commentators said the stump mics revealed how truly awful Australia were behaving. Don't think that single poor comment from de Kock makes SA just as bad.
It was hardly just a single comment, and I'm pretty sure you know that. Players on both sides behaved horrendously, Rabada probably the worst. Didn't help that when he was finally punished the decision was reversed. That sent a pretty bad message to the players on the consequences of bad behaviour. If the umps/referees/whoever genuinely wanted to improve the tension between the teams and the behaviour then reversing the Rabada punishment was about the dumbest thing you could imagine them doing.

Not to mention the crowds playing their part, they were among the most abusive of a touring team I think there's been in a while.

Yeah let's not pretend that anything about that tour was one sided. The stuff that went on between the players was pretty atrocious even before Newlands.

And the behaviour was a bigger issue than the ball-tampering too IMO. It's not like ball tampering was anything new or rare. SA were literally captained by a guy who had been found guilty of it twice. We can only speculate on how widespread it was in world cricket. The only reason the tampering has seemed like such a big deal was the media beat-up and the absurd punishments handed out.

This lockdown has meant greater exposure to casual fans and their nonsense on Facebook. They truly are appalling and I've come to appreciate even the worst we have to offer.

I'm yet to see a cricket-related facebook comment thread that hasn't devolved into meaningless India v Pakistan slinging of insults. It could be an article about an under-15 New Zealand womens domestic tournament and somehow it sill happens.

I couldn't find it in a search (probably because of the words) but has The Test on Amazon Prime been discussed on the forums?

Amazon Prime is worth the price, their originals are better than Netflix's. The Boys is one of the best shows.

I haven't got around to watching The Expanse but I've been meaning to, and I've read all the books

I don't know how it compares to the books but it's an awesome tv show. The boys is good too, even if its commentary does feel dated.

I don't care about the commentary. A dude gets his head crushed to pulp between a woman's thighs while she's riding his face. That's how I want to go.
