Donald, Wasim lead day one rout at the Gabba

World XI 1 for 119 (Gooch 60*) trail Queensland 120 all out (Hohns 38*, Donald 5/30, Wasim 4/16) by 1 run



Alan Donald and Wasim Akram have led the way on a dominant day one for the World XI side in their first tour match against Queensland at the 'Gabba. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the home side struggled against a disciplined and targeted bowling performance from the visitors, slumping early as the pace attack of Donald, Wasim and Curtly Ambrose made early inroads.

Opener Matthew Hayden, who is also part of the Australia A squad and still looking to earn a place in the main Australian squad ahead of the first test in Brisbane, did himself no favours as he was the first to go - edging Ambrose to Carl Hooper at second slip for 4. From the other end, Donald tore through the rest of the top order as he removed Trevor Barsby (2), Jimmy Maher (0) and Stuart Law (5) in quick succession. A brief resistance of 19 from Martin Love came to an end shortly after as he played on Wasim, reducing the home side to 5-33.

The Queensland lower order provided some resistance, but Donald returned to the attack to remove Greg Ritchie (19) and Wade Seccombe (26) to complete his first five wicket haul of the tour. All rounder Trevor Hohns made an entertaining 38 off as many balls, but found few partners as Queensland fell to 120 all out.

With 44 overs ahead of them, the World XI made significant inroads in their run chase as they reduced the deficit to just one before stumps. The lone blemish was Alec Stewart who played at a wide one from Michael Kasprowicz, while captain Graham Gooch (60*) and Gary Kirsten (30*) played cautiously to end the day unbeaten.

Late strikes for Queensland, but Gooch, Kirsten dominate

World XI 3 for 416 (Gooch 210, Kirsten 154*, Bichel 2/120) lead Queensland 120 all out (Hohns 38*, Donald 5/30, Wasim 4/16) by 296 runs



Centuries from World XI skipper Graham Gooch and South African Gary Kirsten have put the World XI in a commanding position at stumps on day two of their tour match against Queensland at the 'Gabba, leading by 296 runs with seven wickets in hand.

Resuming at 1 for 119, it took just two balls for the World XI to take the first innings lead. From there, they never looked back as Gooch and Kirsten played patient but dominant innings as they put on a 339 run stand for the second wicket. A tired Queensland attack of Andy Bichel, Carl Rackemann and Michael Kasprowicz failed to extract the movement out of the track that their World XI counterparts did on the first day - although they kept it tight for the most part, they were unable to create chances against the patient pairing.

Gooch passed his century shortly after drinks in the first session, and was followed not long after by Kirsten. But neither man was willing to stop the scoring there, as Queensland turned to the wrist spin of Trevor Hohns and Stuart Law to find a breakthrough. Neither succeeded, and it took until the 83rd over of the day for Andy Bichel to finally break the mammoth stand as he had Gooch chopping on for 210. That brought Sachin Tendulkar to the crease, and after waiting nearly 130 overs for his opportunity he found himself caught on the crease by Bichel for 11.

Kirsten and Brian Lara saw out the rest of the day unscathed, leaving Queensland a mountain to climb as the tour match heads into day three.

Tbf openers rarely get out cheaply to bad bowlers because by the time the bad bowlers come on, they're in.

Hayden getting out to Ambrose in the 90s is spot on though.

It actually wasn't uncommon at all in the late 90s and early-00s for touring teams to actually get beaten very handily by the State sides, sometimes even by an innings. And IIRC Queensland were the most dominant of them at doing it, too.

Pure speculation of course as to how a genuine World XI would go though, given that you'd think they'd be a lot stronger than a regular touring side

And given how good Law was in those matches it's insane he didn't play 70+ tests
