Ajaz is a devout Muslim, isn't he? Hope that's considered amongst the drinking and shenanigans.
Ive partied with Ajaz but that was around 11 years ago, he had just got into NZ u19 or Akl u19. He had changed from a medium pace to a spinner.

I actually think you can say he's still good in general. In the past 4 years Southee averages 26 in Australia, 24 in the UAE and 18 in SRL. His only genuinely poor overseas performance in that time was v SA in 2016.

I don't think Southee's current 127 average pace incarnation is getting the best out of him either, but by in large it seems to work fairly consistently.
I wonder what Hadlee’s speed was like towards the end of his career when coming off the short run ... his peak as a bowler. I think people had the same complaints about him slowing down. Probably lucky they didn’t have speed guns back then.

Whatever it takes!!!
You really think that one change would've affected the score to that extent? Jadeja is good but that seems like a stretch.

Shaw does look absolutely woeful though. Shri not being here to witness it is disappointing.
backing a finger spinner to make the difference in nz is brave. only 2 (lyon and maharaj) have done it and both also hail from anti-spin nations.
I am not saying Jadeja is gonna take a haul and win us the game. There is a difference to what I am saying and what you guys are getting from these posts. With Jaddu in the side to share overs with Ashwin, it opens up the seamers to have more rest and it looked like they needed it. We will have bowled less of Shami which would have been ideal, we may have let Ash try to take a more attacking role which was needed coz he was our second best bowler in the test. And honestly he would have scored more than 25 runs that Shaw did. Plus there is the fact that he creates pressure in the field. In any knock where Ross Taylor was part of the major partnership, you can never rule out the fact that he might have helped us shag a run out or something.

Oh yeah and finally i should publicly cop my taste and admit southee is still good in nz.

Southee is good as a test match bowler. Issue is he should not be in your LO teams and they keep picking him and making him vice captain.

Btw, if NZ manages to win this series, would it be the first time that they've won a series against the #1 ranked side since the 79/80 win over the Windies? I'm guessing it would be.
WI were #1's presumably from 80-95, and the best we managed was a 1-1 draw in 88.
Aus were then Presumably #1 from 95-08, and again the best we managed was a 0-0 draw in 01/02
Then it was India 08-11 (who beat us home and away), England 2011-2012 (whom we didn't play), and SA 2012-2015 (who thumped us on a couple of different occasions).
I think we also drew 0-0 at home v England when they were No 1. When Matt Prior sold his soul to the devil*.

The devil seemed to leave this debt unpaid for about 6 months before he then sent Mitch Johnson to collect it for him.

The general consensus of the guys who played against him was that Hadlee was still definitely fast-medium (probably around Boult's pace) after he switched to the shorter run.

the zip seems to make a big difference. in the past 4 years there have been too many times where the ball skids along the deck at 124kph and barely makes it to watling from southees bowling but he really got it kicking through this test.

A truly dreadful performance by India all around and the lack of fight was the most disheartening aspect. At least most of the overseas 2018 losses were hard fought. Well done to NZ.

thierry henry likes this.

speaking of which im gonna state cdg 'the big man' isn't actually very big. he took a selfie with my friend and she's 5 foot 3 on a good day. he's not towering over her. i reckon he's 5 foot 10 at best. nickname needs amending to 'the stocky man'

also before i read thierrys posts i literally wouldnt have the slightest interest in this. look what he's done to us.
He's nicknamed the big man because that's what his name means in French.

Lulz India. For a side that hammers 600 every other day at home, the Indian batsmen are embarrassingly poor away from home.

Having read and watched the post match stuff, I do think Kohli brought the toss up unwarranted, which was silly and cheap, but glad he did not dwell on it as if it was the only or even the main reason. You don't win test matches when you lose 7 for 80 and 6 for 40 in your batting efforts. THAT is the major issue and glad he is highlighting that for most of these interviews.

On that note, this is an interesting article for once from crapinfo - I remember they came up with one about the advantage batting first after India's tour of England in 2018 too. Toss has become a major factor everywhere. I would like to agree with whoever it was who said they would like to see the visiting captain get the toss win by default for the first test of the series. Not exactly to implement in that way but I do back that sentiment.

Why should NZ have to bat first in those conditions just because they are the hosts? Seamers/greentops can trouble any batsman and there's no real evidence to say that NZ are better batsmen in those conditions simply because they're at home. We just bowled and batted like assholes, that's all there is to it.

The idea is that pitches will be prepared differently if the visitors got to pick whether to bat first or bowl first

I find it pretty ridiculous that Kohli is bringing up the toss when they failed in their second innings as well? In fact, when India had New Zealand 210/7 or whatever it was, they were right in the game. But then the bowlers and CDG took the lead to 183, and India batted badly second time around as well/NZ bowled well.

If India bowl NZ out for 270 in the first innings, then make 300 themselves, NZ have a potentially difficult chase of 200 to win in the final innings.

They had their chance, and couldn’t play well enough. Much more to do with the game than the toss IMO.
