Saha did a great job with the gloves at home though (can't remember if his batting was required at any point) while Pant's struggled with form and confidence in other formats. Should stick with Saha for now. Pant's obviously capable of more with the bat but he's just as likely to hole out for 6(5) with the team in trouble.
Probably depends on balance I guess. If you pick six bats it's definitely fair enough to stick with Saha, but if you go for a 5/5 combo Saha at 6 is a serious liability IMO.

I think if they went with five bowlers Jadeja would be one of them, so he'd be at six instead.

Reminder of Jadeja's test batting record in the last 2 years:

15 games, 677 runs @ 56, 1 x 100, 6 x 50s.

Yes, I know there were a few not outs to boost the average, and some "downhill skiing".

Picking Ishant and 2 spinners along with him for support would be so dumb. Hopefully they aren't that dumb. Batting is the weak suit and Vihari is so valuable right now.

This test series is very important for india to win it will show if they will do good in England pitch conditions next year.

Nah not sure why anyone would take that forecast in a disheartened direction. I know February is usually nice, but I probably wouldn't want to spin the wheel again, let's put it that way.

You might as well look for signs in a goat's entrails as look at the weather forecast 5 days out.

I believe their record from -96 hours is actually becoming quite good in our more settled summer months. That's according to a neighbour of mine, who probably would say that.

Black Caps test squad to face India: Kane Williamson (captain), Tom Latham, Tom Blundell, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, BJ Watling, Colin de Grandhomme, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult, Ajaz Patel, Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell.
Patel and Jamieson - fair enough. No spare batsman i.e. Young or Philips, apart from Mitchell.

Just noticed on my iphone this morning, didn’t go into any in-depth analysis. Have tickets in the museum stand for Saturday, so was curious. Crap day today here, anyway, which made me wonder. Although they would be playing in it.

Young still some distance away then? Did we have to announce the squad for both the tests upfront? Surprises me they'd go with Mitchell as a spare batsman than Young. Nevertheless no surprises there, the team is as expected.

Anyone going to the Basin? I have a test match pass so hoping to catch some CW members there.
Incredibly it will be my first match watching the national team live since the 2004 crater test at Hamilton.
