The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread (white ball edition)

Can you try your earlier filter and then just sort there by wickets?
Nah, you need to use the all round mode to show wickets and the filter doesn't work properly (Murali shows up as the highest wicket taking opener). Even if you use a "innings played" filter, Kallis shows up at positions 3 and 4.

Still ok though. Coz you also had Jayasuriya in there. And he can make up for someone's off day in that attack.
There's definitely enough bowling, but only 3 ATG bowlers who are all from the subcontinent. Pakistan have fielded bowling attacks on a par or better than this side.

Whatever happened to Ajantha Mendis? Seemed to drop off the face of the Earth after a while.

In 90s
Man of the match awards
Tendulkar 35 Bevan 4

In WC
Tendulkar 1000@58 Bevan 390@ 43

We should completely ignore WC record when it suits us

The standout ODI batsman of 90s has only 4 man of the match awards :laugh:
May be there was Warne and McGrath to share a lot of them while SRT only had Kumble to Share with. Number two, SRT played zillion more matches than Bevan in 90s.

However i still think SRT > Bevan, and Dhoni > Bevan as a finisher.

I didn't. Game was well and truly over by then..
I realized that the game was over when a flat track was given. We never had ability to match Australia's fire power with the bat. Bit of help for seamers or spinners would have made it more even.

It is difficult to completely dismiss an argument that Kohli is the greatest ODI batsman of all time. But something keeps telling my mind that Viv still edges it. *****ing mental batsman, could do things that many other superb batsmen couldn't and comfortably my favorite batsman growing up.
Viv was great but only concession I have is that he never plated an ATG ODI spinner throughout his career. Closest was Qadir, and those exchanges did not go well compared to his standards. Murali, Saqlain, Warne and Kumble (or even Brad Hogg) are better than Qadir with the ball. And very good new ones like Ashwin, Kuldeep, Chahal, Mujeeb and Rashid Khan keeps popping up. Modern greats have to deal with these kinds of spinners too.

Jayawardane was a rubbish odi bat, wc efforts notwithstanding. I wouldnt find room for him in a strong lineup (say, several current teams), let alone an atg one. He is vastly overrated on the back of his test exploits, in the same way as Sanga before he went on his epic tear at the end (not to sat that Sanga wasnt always a good odi bat, but the delta between his odi and test batting was similar to Jayawardendas)

Marvan Atapattu
Kusal Perera
Hashan Tillakaratne
Dinesh Chandimal
Romesh Kaluwitharana+
Russel Arnold
Thisara Perera
Ravi Ratnayeke
Dilhara Fernando
Suranga Lakmal
Rangana Herath

Something of an overabundance of openers here. Was thinking of an all-out twin attack of Kalu & Kusal, but plumped with Atapattu up top, who is also probably the best choice for captain. Tillakaratne provides an anchoring role at 3, before the aggressors step in. Russell Arnold, who I've always rated highly, provides a spin option alongside TPC. I also decided to run with Ravi Ratnayeke over Farveez, with Perera, Lakmal & Fernando forming the rest of the seam attack.

Unlucky: Nuwan Zoysa, Kumar Dharmasena, Upul Chandana, Roshan Mahanama, Rumesh Ratnayake, Farveez Maharoof, Upul Tharanga, Roy Dias

Sanga by no means a great ODI bat. But he is a dependable batsman who will score some runs, and a top class wicketkeeper. Mahela is hit and miss. When it comes through he is imperial. Given that he is in a side with a lot of good batsmen, failures can be tolerated.

Additionally there is hardly anyone to take up the spot as well, may be Russell Arnold.

would be my second XI.

Asanka Gurusinha, Hashan Tillekaratne, Ravi Ratnayeke, Thisara Perera, Herath miss out. Zoysa is easily the third best ODI seamer we had behind Vaas and Malinga. Maharoof, Randiv and Rumesh R. all can hit it long.

ODI XI by batting average per position (min 50 innings):

Sharma (Ind)
Amla (SA)
Kohli (Ind)
Bevan (Aus)
Matthews (SL)
Dhoni+ (Ind) (Bevan was the top here too but Dhoni at 6 gets the nod over Sarwan at 4 because Bevan's average was lower at 6 than at 4)
Mahmudullah (Ban)
Razzaq (Pak)
Lee (Aus)
Waqar (Pak)
Anderson (Eng)

ODI XI by batting strike rate per position (min 50 innings):

Roy (Eng)
Sehwag (Ind)
Kohli (Ind)
Morgan (Eng/Ire)
Raina (Ind)
Buttler+ (Eng)
Afridi (Pak)
Perera (SL)
Lee (Aus)
Malinga (SL)
Walsh (WI)

Comparing the teams, I think the batting averages team has the best batting, the batting strike rates team has the best bowling attack and the most runs team is the one most likely to win a series.
