I can't believe I ate the whole thing
eh, I think that's reading too much into it IMO. Recently we saw Langer taking a break with McDonald taking the team to India. Breaks happen. But, the timing is awful, when the team is probably at it's lowest it has been for some time, in terms of results and player confidence.

Sure but it's not made public one day before the start of the series. He would have known the dates of the fixtures well in advance. Besides there was 20 days break between the Aussie and India series. Pretty sure there's more to this.

Did NZC announce it somewhere? Maybe the journo just found out through some other means and tweeted it.

Maybe he has a relatives wedding to attend, a trip he planned way in advance with his family, etc. I enjoy conspiracy theories but there really doesn’t seem to be one here. Timing is unfortunate but realistically he may as well take leave now during ODIs instead of the T20s/Tests and when the WC is even closer.

For the best of NZ Cricket I hope you are right and there's nothing sinister about it. Just that he dropped Southee in Australia makes me think otherwise. Hope there's nothing in it.

Gary Stead taking a so called pre-planned break. Wonder if that is really true. Should grab some popcorn and check with the sources if that is really true. My guess he's probably not seeing eye to eye with the players or the selector. This is definitely a result of either dropping a senior player like Tim Southee in Aussie and now the latest couple of selections. Wheels are coming off of late.
Pretty interesting we're hearing about this 24 hours out from the first ODI. That's either a) bullshit or b) pretty average PR work that definitely looks worse given the poor recent form.

Never heard of this before. Hesson never had a break, did he? Now Stead is having a spell this early into the job?

Definitely don't want to turn this into a Seifert bashathon as he has shown plenty. However, he has also shown himself to be pretty dicey in a number of areas in his game - hard to pin down where exactly as he has plenty of shots but also seems to have a lot of miss-hits and plays and misses and generally giving chances in his game. His "control percentage", since that's the thing now, seems to be kinda low.

Also just generally struggling to lay bat on ball when quick runs are needed, on multiple occasions, is a bit worrying. He seems to be a "fast scorer if they bowl where I want them to" type rather than a genuinely adaptable batsman, despite the range of shots he has.

Actually, I think it's fair to say that generally speaking we lack dependable "clean striking" right now, as much as I hate cricket being reduced to that. Not someone who is "dependable" in the sense of always making runs, but a guy you are confident is going to be smacking them for as long as he's there.

CDG would probably be the best we have (in fact his career S/R says he's one of the best ever) and he is being conspicuously not played in that role.
Yeah, I wanted to make sure I wasn't bashing as well. He's relatively young and has the right to get better - he's clearly a talented player. But he's got holes in his game that you have pretty well spelled out there.

CDG would be well suited as an opener, not only in T20 but ODI cricket playing the role Baz did during the World Cup. We all know he struggles against spin early and can get bogged down not turning strike over - none of which are generally issues at the top (and he used to do that job for Auckland as well). It's not going to happen, but he'd be our ODI opening bat in my side and I'd rotate him in that role with Munro/Gup as well in T20s

You guys never take leave from your jobs? :p

Anyway, coaches are kinda overrated and I don't think it will have much of an impact. They may even start winning.

I feel like, if you care about your job, you do your best to plan your leave to avoid clashes with significant/busy times of the year in your field. Maybe this was something unavoidable, but if not, surely there would have been ample downtime between series that he could have chosen.

seifert plays pretty differently in red ball cricket. a lot more punches straight down the ground, happy to punish width. i just think he's a yolo white ball player, and his terrible domestic one day record but decent t20 record would back that up.

Only watched the highlights but surely Seifert and Munro have to be two of the better options for NZ going forward. Not basing this off anything other than how they hold their shape at the crease and the reasonable consistency they showed in this series.

Crucial series for Guptill coming up, hasn't been much of a factor in the limited over sides for a good two seasons and there are a lot of potential candidates for slots in the top 3 now.

Hope Chapman has returned an improved player, he was very quickly sorted out by England two years ago and India's is a better attack.

He'll play all formats in the long run. Only a matter of time. He's not a hack which is good.

Good thing is they have got Chapman in when he's in good form. Often we make the mistake of picking good players when they are not going all that well. You got to have form players. At least they will be positive from the word go.

If by crucial you mean, meaningless ODI series, then sure.

High performance coaching manager this morning on Radio Sport was struggling to answer all questions. They have standard answer of "That's not under my domain" to anything asked that is uncomfortable. Jeremy Coney was ruthless. He was pretty much saying if you need a break to go see your family mid series then get a 9 to 5 job in a hardware store.

Didn’t hear the interview but that high performance manager is pretty uninspiring at the best of times.
