*Official* England in South Africa 2019/20

Yeah, I'd have taken this at the start of the innings. I don't know whether the pitch is a bit easier than I expected, England have batted pretty well, or SA have bowled poorly. Maybe all three. I suppose we won't fully know until SA bat.
Saffers used first new ball terribly, Broad will be the key early on - if he can get amongst them they could buckle if not our attack could look as placid as anything.

I'm not arguing with your first point but I guess we'll see whether your second one is right. Curran does have the better test average of the two, has been doing OK at number 8 lately and Woakes hasn't batted for ages. But Root needs to tell him he'll be batting at 10 if he keeps throwing it away like that. You wonder if his early success has gone to his head a bit.
Although frankly Root is in no position to lecture after his performance today. Frankly there were grounds for criticism if du plessis had taken his catch, but to then not learn from that was terrible. What happened to the traditional test match approach that good batting performances are built on partnerships, and at the fall of a wicket the other batsman needs to give the new man time to settle. Butler hasn’t helped himself much over the last year, but others haven’t helped him either.

I think Curran is in a bit of danger of falling to the Moeen effect. Stewart claims his future could be as a batsman ( as it was hoped Moeen might be). But batting at 8-9 just seems to trigger this “counter attack from ball one” approach, which perhaps should be considered unnecessary with other batsmen still in (and especially with Woakes to come).

It infuriates me how much Root is wasting his talent and potential by tossing it off every time he gets to 50. Im also convinced that his lack of conversion drives a lot of the others to fail to convert more than they should too, 4 scores of 40+ and none of them have made a ton is crap.

There's just no need for that Jos :@

This is such a lousy armchair take.

350 is about par first innings at Wanderers. Movement bounce can make batting difficult but runs are scored quickly. Against this SA batting I think 250 was probably about par.

I kinda agree but I can’t see how any England fan could be happy about it. Buttler’s got to be one of the best limited overs batsmen we’ve ever had. That ability not translating just hurts.
Well in a way Bairstow is a similar thing as he has been immense as an ODI player and his test ability has vanished. Both have had long enough now and both have faults they don't seem to want/be able to rectify in tests.

Because he's had more than enough chances. Foakes got dropped for Bairstow spitting his dummy out.,

In the ashes there were tons there for him. And he just carried on batting like it was over 45-50

He doesn't have to bat one way all the time. Like we've seen bat time before.

Didn't need to swing the bat here, were 2-1 up in our first innings with 3 days and 2 sessions left in this test.

He shouldn't have been at the start of it anyway. Nor should Bairstow, both been useless for ages.
Therein lies the problem, especially as Foakes had a thoroughly mediocre county season with the bat. Suddenly we don't have one keeper that we could confidently bat at 7, and nobody saw that coming a year or two ago. Maybe Foakes will step up a gear in Sri Lanka.

Would snatch your hand off for 350 from here.

Probably take 340 if it came with chips.
Yup, Wood's not quite good enough to edge those.

EDIT
Whereas Woakes is. It's hard to see Broad hanging around here.
Talking of whom, do we ever work out how many other test number 11s have a test hundred to their name?
