Hugely important innings this for Buttler. If he fails/throws it away I'd imagine the calls for Foakes would be deafening.
But wouldn't it be fun to see Jonny Bairstow get bowled another 6 times in the role before we get to that point?

I dunno, call me old fashioned but I think a bloke with 10 FCs tons should probably bat ahead of a bloke with 0.
Think Curran was above Woakes today purely because he actually has played lately and Woakes hasn't. If it wasn't that then heads need examining in the dressing room.

Hendricks isn’t Curran slow but he is pretty gentle nowadays. I assume injuries have done that but back of length gun barrel at 130kph isn’t going to get you too far.

Has Curran even done anything with the bat since his India series?
Made a 50 against SL straight after, hasn't made one since then over two years ago now, although he was close last time at bat.

He's been consistently pretty annoying with the bat even when only making 30s but if "annoying/demoralising slapping" is what he's striving for he can do that just as well at nine.

His first spell both days seemed a fair bit quicker on average than his follow up spells.

48 and 64 in Sri Lanka, 37 against Ireland when we looked like we were struggling to set a 4th innings target, 29* in NZ, another 20, lots in the teens and a few fails as well. Plus his 44 at PE as already mentioned. Probably acceptable for a number 8, but disappointing after the India series. I'll happily confess that I didn't know Woakes has 10 FC tons to his name, but his recent test innings haven't added up to much. In other words, it's not at all black and white about which of them should be batting higher.

All that being said, Woakes is batting well now, so lets not jinx him.

Need another 50 odd to be competitive I think, if these two can take us most of the way there and Wood/Broad have a slog that should do.

Yeah, I'd have taken this at the start of the innings. I don't know whether the pitch is a bit easier than I expected, England have batted pretty well, or SA have bowled poorly. Maybe all three. I suppose we won't fully know until SA bat.
