Why is it that whenever South Africa has a string of poor results comments about them descending to the level of Zimbabwe or Bangladesh come out? While the test side is not in a good state at the moment, there's no reason yet to think that they can't bounce back. It's possible that it could take a while given the way the sport's been mismanaged of late, but doom and gloom predictions are definitely premature.

Sorry to break it to you but it's easy to see from the outside. Your quota system, as necessary as it is from a Human Rights perspective, is not conducive to winning cricket games. Losing Oliver to Kolpak to me was a huge red flag for the future of SA cricket

Mark my words, they're not winning a test series against Australia, India or England for a long time

Sorry to break it to you but it's easy to see from the outside. Your quota system, as necessary as it is from a Human Rights perspective, is not conducive to winning cricket games. Losing Oliver to Kolpak to me was a huge red flag for the future of SA cricket

I don't understand this logic at all. They have a weak team and have had a weak team for a few years now, and somehow not miraculously transforming into a good team straight away makes SA cricket doomed...?

They have been obliterated in most matches since Pereras stunning innings. It was akin to Skywalker blowing up the death star


But seriously I just don't see a bright future when they're forced to do things like give Bavuma a permanent test spot to satisfy a quota despite him probably being the first admit he's not one of the best 10 best bats SA have on the cricket scene atm let alone one of the best 6

I assume you were saying SA were doomed in 2015 then, since results in India are so dispositive? And that Australia were doomed in 2013?

Yeah like if you want to just say that quotas are inimically Bad then say so, but blaming them for SA's inability to play spin or inability to magically, with a click of their fingers, replace two middle order bats with about 16000 Test runs between them just does not stand up to even the slightest bit of scrutiny

Edit - sorry after rereading your post I see you say if I think quotas are inimically bad then say so. So I'll delete what I just wrote essentially saying just that. It's a tricky subject to discuss obviously so that's why I didn't initially

Come on now. It's literally a limit on how many people of a certain race can be in the team

Therefore it's literally restricting a demographic's representation so say there happened to be 6 white Kallis 2.0s waiting in the wings only 5 could be picked. And I know there isn't even 1 out there atm but I still see it as detrimental to a teams ceiling. While fully understanding the reason for it. It's a necessary evil(for lack of S better phrase)

If cricket selection was done by randomly picking the five best players out of a pool of however many million then sure. That is not in fact how it works.

It's really not IMO, unless the other four are all clearly better bowlers than Stokes and Stokes is basically just playing as a bat. If Stokes is fit to bowl I'd even rather have a specialist batsman come in at number eight than play four other seamers. It's just such a waste of what he brings to the team.

Suggesting that SA are going to slump to Zimbabwe level is ridiculous hyperbole........they constantly churn out top quality quick bowlers and (without checking) I very much doubt there has been a time since readmission that they haven't had at least 1 of the top 5 bowlers in the world at any given time. Yes their batting is currently as poor as it's ever been but that could be said for at least most of the test sides getting around.........but all the time they've got top flight bowlers they will remain in the top half of test cricket IMO

SA's home record really is an anomaly, even when they were great.......and England always seem to step up when they tour. If they had a return series in England any time soon I wouldn't be betting any large sums on England winning it.

But I will say I meant in my scenario if there was 6 white kallis 2.0s tearing up the domestic scene and only 5 being eligible for selection. But yeah

Or to make it simpler Duanne Oliver being clearly worthy of making the test side in merit but for balance reasons realising he was essentially fighting for one bowling spot instead of 3 (as Elgar/QDK/FAF are concrete members of the team)
