Kippax's Firebirds and Wellington Club Cricket Thread

A fantastic initiative. It's cool that they're spreading the net too with Gray based in Tauranga. Watching the final they mentioned Taylor was a young player to Lords. I think Nicholls was too. Do they still run that? It's cool to see Leopard and Clarkson are playing in Australia over the off-season too.

Yeah, but no Kiwis this year in the 2019 MCCYC squad. Perhaps that Ben Sears near-defection has put NZC off the idea. :p

The Whiting Financial Services Wellington provincial A season gets underway tomorrow when the squad travels North to take on Central Districts A in a three-day match at Nelson Park in Napier.

Head coach Chris Nevin has selected a strong squad for the season opener, despite a number of late changes.

Young seamer Michael Snedden has been promoted to the Firebirds squad to face Canterbury in round two of the Plunket Shield also starting tomorrow, so New Zealand Under 19 representative Jesse Taskoff comes in to the side.

Batsman Chander Ravi also comes into the side following his strong 98 for Taita over the weekend.

Contracted Firebirds Lauchie Johns and Jakob Bhula are also included, and Firebirds rookie Troy Johnson will be looking to continue his strong form after his 130 for Hutt District on Saturday.

Luke Georgeson will captain the side.

Play gets underway from 10.30am tomorrow.

Wellington A squad v Central DIstricts A

Luke Georgeson (C)

Jakob Bhula

James Hartshorn

Lauchie Johns

Troy Johnson

Josh Mann

Callum McLachlan

Chander Ravi

Alex Ridley

Jesse Tashkoff

Rakitha Weerasundara

There's no 130k Bevan Small around to try to run through them like he did last season. Consequently a ton against this lot at Nelson Park isn't going to be that big of a statement, unfortunately.

Ma’ara Ave — captain — Marlborough

Akash Gill — Whanganui

Arana Noema-Barnett — Manawatū

Bayley Wiggins — Hawke’s Bay

Carlos Jensen — Manawatū

Curtis Heaphy — Manawatū

Felix Murray — Nelson

Jack Harris — Manawatū

Jayden Lennox — Hawke’s Bay

Logan Trower — Hawke’s Bay

Matt Edmondson — Hawke’s Bay

Matt Good — Horowhenua-Kāpiti

Nice to see Tashkoff joining various former NZ under 19 players in that Wellington A squad. I think Hartshorn's dad was himself a former NZ under 19 captain and now a doctor.

Presumably, Clarkson and Leopard weren't available for CD A.

No they'll probably be in action against England again tomorrow, 1pm.

Well, "in action" for 20 balls of lusty swings and no bowling, one imagines, after Kitchen and Devcich have played the role of grizzled gatekeepers to perfection.

Yeah, Hartshorn has ripped through the top order. They might be affected by Uni exams too - otherwise would have expected the Zohrab's to be there.

feels like arana noema-barnett has spent thousands of years playing for cd a but never made it to the full side. bit odd given we usually have an injury and/or unavailability list and someone able to keep their spot in the a team for so long would eventually get an opportunity higher up.

CD seem to have had a bit of a logjam of all-rounders with Clarkson, Leopard and Luddick all arriving on the scene. Noema-Barnett does seem like a good player who you'd think would have played in several other provincial teams by now.

Hartshorn now has 5 for 5, having taken all the wickets so far. Haven't seen any footage of him.

Hartshorn now 6 fer... If Wellington As played this game last week and Hartshorn took as many wickets he will have made his debut for firebirds today ahead of Snedden. By the next game the likes of Hamish Bennett, Ollie Newton and others will be back and this lad may miss out on selection.

Good to see the lad do well, he was quite a handy U19s player for Wellington.

Ha, I overlooked that Munro's Dirty Dozen had another game.

Back to back 100 for Troy Johnson. The lad scored 130+ on the weekend in club cricket and has backed up with another 100 in the As. He's already played few super smash games last year and if he continues to score good runs he will likely fill in when we miss players later this season. The bench strength of Wellington looking really good in all departments. Is Hutt Hawks contributing to this sudden burst of talent in Wellington? The teams across all age groups haven't been better ever before.

Quite an exciting climax building in that game with Tashkoff and Ravi needing a 100 or so with 5 wickets left.

Interesting stuff in local club scene today. Lots of firebirds turning up for the game. Most have had a spud game so far.

Victoria University have in their line up Malcolm Nofal opening and Devon Conway batting at no.3 Unfortunately the club match ball and the nondescript players had better of them. Nofal going for 8 and Devon for 5 vs Collegians a second tier club side. It must be so hard for these guys to adjust.

Elsewhere Jimmy Neesham, Iain McPeake and Rachin Ravindra have turned up for HDCC vs Karori. Karori in their line up have Michael Pollard and Jakob Bhula opening for them. They also have in their line up Hamish Marshall, Peter Younghusband and Joe Austin Smille the lad that in fact paved way for Tom Blundell to get in the firebirds team quitting cricket few years ago. Looks like he's back. Iain McPeake has bowled all right 5 overs for 18 with no wicket, Jimmy has gone for 31 runs in 6 overs and Rachin is probably the only one that has struck in with 3 wickets for 15 runs in 10 overs. Jacob Bhula went all right, scored 48 off 89 before Ravindra got him.

Looks a very windy day but may stroll to Hutt Rec and watch the Wellington stars for a bit.

Ollie Newton playing for Upper Hutt, scored 52 off 88 balls. Matt Taylor 27 off 26 balls. I reckon Matt Taylor should be tried in the Super Smash.

Logan Van Beek smashed 50+ and took 3 fer for Taita meanwhile Fraser Colson and Jamie Gibson also warmed up with some runs for Easts.

Rachin Ravindra scored 75 and Jimmy Neesham 30+ to win the game for HDCC.

Half a dozen partners run out in the space of eight overs! Twitter users were talking about this, Calvin Flanagan (a Free State U19 rep last summer) slightly fortunate that journo Andrew Voerman didn't turn it into a story.

Flanagan very recently brought in to boost the perennially poor fortunes of North City, which he has with the actual ballstriking side of it. It's just the fact his more conservative (stats preening...) perspective of risk doesn't seem to have been very compatible with the chancy young Kiwi boys. I suppose it's not quite as bad as it sounds, seeing three tailenders were merely trying to get him back on strike in the last over, and no one got run out in the 64 he made in the afternoon game.

Hopefully this experience doesn't have him leaning in the Obus Pienaar direction of heading home, rather than making Conway and Nofal's choice to stay.

This guy doesn't look like he's going to be Devon Conway II, in that tricky period that looms after a Conway ascension.

Very handy though how PitchVision will allow me to bring up any old South African 1st XI footage as a quick indicator of whether Wellington's attacks are in for a bruising punishment or seemly and decorous punishment, before I've even gone to a club ground to watch the new Boer du jour play.

If you want to look at an import that is decent this year, HDCC have Sadiq Kirmani son of former Indian international Syed Kirmani. Heard he's quite handy with the bat and can hit a long ball. Pity he's nearly 30 though.
