The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

I have always paired one modern day opener (Gavaskar) with one of the English legends. I was oscillating between Hobbs and Hutton. But DoG has changed my mind(for now) to Jack Hobbs. I have always thought and still think Andy Flower deserves to be on ATG team ahead of Gilchrist. I would wait for Smith to finish his career before replacing Sachin in my ATG team.
Still haven't been convinced that Sunil accomplished any thing that Hutton didn't or faced any unique conditions or opposition that Sir Len didn't

Played for a weaker team. Faced better bowlers. Bigger impact on Indian cricket.

Hutton was very good. But not sure if he faced the level of competition Sunny did.

Whatever it takes!!!
DoG has definitely made me realize I have under rated Hobbs a lot. Other than that, it also puts into perspective the frankly unreal numbers that have been put out by Steve Smith and to a lesser extent, Sangakkara. Those were some of the eye openers for me from this exercise.

Two of those are irrelevent and we can agree to disagree on the others.

Was Flower really so bad as a keeper? From what I have seen, he was a good. Hardly remember him dropping catches.
Don't mistake the Zimbabwe bowlers never drawing edges for Flower not dropping catches.

Flower was passable as a keeper but nowhere near the Gilchrist/Dhoni level and they're not even the best pure keepers.

was Dave Houghton a decent keeper? I know he kept but have no idea if he was a genuine keeper or an Andy Flower-esque makeshift keeper.

He makes the Zimbabwe ATG team easily regardless

Just saying that the quality of the keeper is little correlation too the catches per innings of a keeper.
ok fair enough

I am just saying I didnt see anything in the 90s, or i dont see anything in the stats now, that reveal any weaknesses in flower's keeping. i remember him as a competent keeper. but we have had this discussion already. so i'll try and come up with some other issue to fight over...

happy new year

Sadly keeping is very subjective and often relies on ones own eyes and or contemporary review.

Which is a terrible thing for the stat brigade as there is no stat that properly quantifies the skill.

I'm surprised you're still arguing it after last time, I'd have thought we came to the pretty solid conclusion that he was not a very good keeper. IIRC PEWS came in with anecdotes about a Zimbabwe cricket forum that he frequents/used to frequent talking all the time about how ordinary he was.
