Interesting that you dont think Rassie has any pressure to force the pace. Nortje has a batting strike rate of 4 and we arent even at the halfway point in the test.

Im not saying he should swing hard, but runs are pretty important right now.
Not saying he should have started deadbatting full tosses or anything, but careful accumulation is the best way to go in these situations. Nortje's SR shouldn't have been a factor imo, you take anythnig from your nightwatchman as a useful bonus and the scoring rate should naturally go up a bit if/when they get out and the next actual batsman comes in

Wouldn't have Denly on at this point

My theory was that if he looked to score the field would spread a bit and it would help him and his teams positiion. Of course he gets out looking to score so it looks quite poor.

Brilliant for Bess, this hasn't been the best winter results wise but we have found some young players for the future and probably found more in one winter than we had over the last 4 years.

That's a perfectly decent theory tbf and it sort of worked when he was attacking Bess the over before he got out. I just thought that the defecit was enough for the risk/reward of playing aggresively wasn't worth it if it went the wrong way. Plus my (possibly wrong) impression is that VdD is better at accumulating than outright attacking

So I guess the main question is do they enforce the follow on according to how much rain may be around over the rest of the game.

No real reason to put the field out, had 4 wickets in the shed already and lead by 380+... let them attack.

Rassie is a player with limited shot selection at the peak of his skill right now. If it was not the crisis that SA cricket finds itself in, he would not have been selected.

Should clarify that I don't know if it's happened since then; I just checked a few likely series.
(If you count Barnes as a spinner, he took the first 5 wickets twice in 1913-14).

It's good to be the ones not being torn apart by a mediocre spinner for once in a test match. Roston Chase's 8fer in the West Indies still gives me nightmares
