Yes bessy boy
I don’t know thoughHas a spinner taken the first five wickets in a test in South Africa before? Howzattt
Not saying he should have started deadbatting full tosses or anything, but careful accumulation is the best way to go in these situations. Nortje's SR shouldn't have been a factor imo, you take anythnig from your nightwatchman as a useful bonus and the scoring rate should naturally go up a bit if/when they get out and the next actual batsman comes inInteresting that you dont think Rassie has any pressure to force the pace. Nortje has a batting strike rate of 4 and we arent even at the halfway point in the test.
Im not saying he should swing hard, but runs are pretty important right now.
Memories of that 2016 tour to India when it comes to playing spin so very wrong.as soon as he shaped to cut that short channel ball i thought 'yep, here we go'
My theory was that if he looked to score the field would spread a bit and it would help him and his teams positiion. Of course he gets out looking to score so it looks quite poor. Not saying he should have started deadbatting full tosses or anything, but careful accumulation is the best way to go in these situations. Wouldn't have Denly on at this point either
That's a perfectly decent theory tbf and it sort of worked when he was attacking Bess the over before he got out. I just thought that the defecit was enough for the risk/reward of playing aggresively wasn't worth it if it went the wrong way. Plus my (possibly wrong) impression is that VdD is better at accumulating than outright attackingMy theory was that if he looked to score the field would spread a bit and it would help him and his teams positiion. No real reason to put the field out, had 4 wickets in the shed already and lead by 380+... let them attack. My theory was that if he looked to score the field would spread a bit and it would help him and his teams positiion. Of course he gets out looking to score so it looks quite poor.

What a stat. I'd wager it won't be 2135 before it happens again.Colin Blythe in 1905-6 (4th Test at Cape Town); opened the bowling and took 5-15 as SA reached 44-5.
