I can't believe I ate the whole thing
the plunket shield batting records of the current otago squad are grim. i didn't realise how bad the games played to batting averages comparison was.

here's hoping they improve soon (against teams i don't support ofc)
Was hoping Kelly would really kick on with his Otago move. Has done reasonably well in T20 and Ford Trophy.

Otago should look to become more of the SA pathway as well, until the younger guys improve.

Who won the U17 championship? Anyone know?
Caterbury were the best and Auckland the last. Wellington came 3rd, ND 2nd, Otago 4th and CD 5th.

Under 17s brings very good memory.

Some years ago the under 17 tourney was played in Wellington. I was interested in couple of kids so wandered over to Karori to watch. Saw other guys such as Bruce Edgar (he was going to take over Wellington that year from memory or maybe the next year), NZC cricket folks etc Was mighty impressed by an Otago opening bowler that was nipping the ball all over the place, he was Nathan Smith. Saw another kid that was going ballistic in CD Colours, that was Leopard. There was this huge kid that towered all other kids around and was hitting the ball a long way. That was Josh Clarkson. I was told CD was a very strong side.

At a distance I saw few guys gathered and all keenness watching Wellington bat. While I wandered over I saw this kid no more than 5.2 or 5.3 hit a straight drive right off the screws and the ball raced away splitting mid off and mid on. I thought geez that's some shot for a 16 year old. As I got closer to the blokes and inquired about the dude I was told he's about 13 years old and opening the batting. I'm sure any of you can guess who that was, it was Rachin Ravindra. As I hung around for a while he scored quickly and his balance at the crease was unbelievable. I couldn't believe a kid as young as that can bat that well. Then and there I was a fan. I have followed him since  He didn't score all that many runs but it was evident this was a special talent.

Ended up going to the entire tourney and watching the NZC stars of future. Finn Allen, Felix Murray, Ben Sears etc played then and it was great to watch them then. Glad to see so many young kids from that bunch have carried on to become professional cricketers.

Oh for the record the blokes that were scoring lots of runs and taking plenty of wickets in fact became unknowns over the years. From then on I stopped rating the runs and wickets at that age.

Check the twitter out, mentioned by one of the twitter user... this is around the time when Martin Crowe predicted this kid Ravindra is a star in the making. We'll only know if he was way off mark or right on the cue in some years time.

Jacob Cumming the son of Craig? K Weerasundara any relation to Rakitha? J Fairbrother any relation to England's best ODI bat until a few years ago? M McMillan?

I mean, some names are fairly common but usually the kids of cricketers often end up in the family business.

Fantastic post. Really do hope all of them become stars. It is also great to see that these guys have gone on and on, and made runs/take wickets on noticeable enough occasions. Sear's 6-fer, Phillips and Allen's hundies against Archer & co. Nathan Smith's all-round brilliance, Ravindra's 130 against an attack feauturing Lockie...there have been some very positive and most importantly, recent highlights of their ability.

Here's hoping they aren't debuted at 29. Gotta get these guys in. The best training facilities, coaches and general learning is at the international level. Toiling away in the domestics for a prolonged period won't speed up their progress, I reckon.

Choking on it again a bit, Otago. We can all tell from Craig Cumming's voice that they get so much more out of doing well in the Super Smash than most.

The only good thing about a Uni Oval final from Wellington's perspective is that our injection of overseas glamour in the current day averages 300 against you. Last time, we were hitting you with Borgas.
