If you guys had to choose say 5 cricketers, based on their impact on the game of cricket for any period you want to choose, who would they be?

WG Grace, obviously
DG Bradman, obviously
DK Lillee, was the starting point of the pace era. The WI quartet was built on his blue print to modern test fast bowling.
SR Tendulkar, the game's biggest star ever in terms of global reach. Career coincided with the growth of ODIs, and the growth of India, making him the biggest ODI cricketer ever. Influenced the box office, reach and appeal of the game for two decades.
AC Gilchrist, made sure the wk-batsman is not the same ever again

I was using general batting averages, not at specific positions and the general cricinfo minimums.

Thought you might have been treating him as your spinner. Hard to tell exactly what he was up to when he bowled, but I sort-of suspect he was bowling regulation off/leg cutters. He claims to both swing & spin the ball IIRC.

From what I have read of Barnes' bowling, it would be not the slightest bit correct to describe his bowling as "regulation off/leg cutters". Apparently, he considered himself a spinner and very clearly used spinners' grips, and would get what is from the descriptions very clearly drift from spin.

On a different note, not thinking about XI’s or rankings or counting #batdeep into any equation, what would you guys see as being your ideal 3 or 4 man pace attack? Just something I’ve been wondering about after seeing Wasim in so many experts greatest XI’s.

Thing is, from reading about him, I would consider him a quick spinner ala Underwood or O'Reilly. But if k recall correctly, even persons who saw them both didn't clarify him as a spinner. And to that, that he opened the bowling. It's a tough call.

When he was the best in the side for that role, he wouldn't but assuming he wasn't a total windbag.
