very auckland that knock. industriously jammy with flashes of pure talent. good knock.

shouldn't be getting out bowled as a specialist batsman like that though. close your gate mate.

Insert dropped catches caveats as you like, but I've been impressed with Phillips here. Has looked a much more composed player than what we've seen from him in white ball cricket, where I thought he'd looked out of his depth.

That seam movement has come out of nowhere. Think he was a bit lazy on the defence though.

Cummins has to hit the actual top of off stump more often than any other bowling going around right now.

also deadset how grim is it arguably the two best nz batsmen on this tour have been the two least experienced with 3 tests between them?

Yeah with the Steve Smith shuffle you’d think Phillips would block that mode of dismissal and get struck outside the line

It's decked back a bit. It's a very slightly loose defensive shot with a bit of a push and a gap between bat and pad, but there are very few bowlers would could exploit it like that IMO. A really tiny mistake if at all.

Definitely supports the theory that the others' struggles are mental.

Out of depth in his NZ T20 outings, but was only 20-21 years old, and has had 2 good seasons in CPL since then. Hopefully selectors will switch from Munro to Phillips + Seifert after the World T20.

yes. our media and the wider fanbase will probably try and blame the plunket shield for this (and if it involves forcing nzc to take it seriously again im all for it tbh) but the most impressive batsmen for nz have come straight from domestic cricket to here.

even todd astle is looking pretty good here and he's given up trying to bat properly for canterbury and embraced #engineroom.
