DoG's Top 100 Test Batsmen Countdown Thread

I wonder if Barrington will be placed ahead of Sobers. Played in a similar time period and had a more complete record. His SR may affect his ranking

If it’s a cultural norm then why don’t we refer to other players by the first names?
It's an Asian thing isn't it? Many Asian cricketers are referred to more commonly by their first names... Kapil, mahela, Rohit, many many others. It's hardly a Sachin exclusive thing

People don't have an issue with "Viv" either. Basically it's ok as long as the first name isn't generic as **** like Steve or Allan or Mark which are basically half the non-asian cricketers. You all just have boring sounding first names.

Fair enough. Apologies. I just get fanboi vibes when Tendulkar is referred to as "Sachin". It's probably more a term of endearment.

Also true if the player has a cooler last name like Ganguly or Dravid.

No.14

Ricky Ponting (Australia) 849

Quality Points: 750
Career Points: 99

Career/Runs: 1995-2012, 13278 (rank 3)

Overall average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 48.22 (51.86) 43.31 (46.59) 53.33 (58.77) (rank 27)
50 Innings Peak Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate (2004-2006): 72.43 57.95 54.96 (rank 6)
Non-Home Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 43.69 41.07 51.91 (rank 63)
Quality Opposition Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 49.73 46.28 54.97 (rank 24)

Now superseded by Steve Smith as Australia's best since Bradman, Ricky Ponting at one time boosted an average of 54.13 (58.47) after 118 matches. This would have been good enough to place him at 9th with 881 points. But his career took a downturn from 2008 and in his remaining 49 matches, he only averaged 36.30 (38.58). His was a long, drawn out decline but he should be remembered for his outstanding peak during the mid-noughties when a century looked almost inevitable every time he strode to the crease, especially if the bowling side didn't get him out early. His away average is relatively mediocre and his travails in India against Harbhajan have already been documented in this thread. But Ricky Ponting in his pomp should be judged as perhaps the most classy and devastating batsman of the 21st century.

Can you please just accept that Barrington got fairly lucky? He is underrated IMO but not that badly.

Kallis ahead of Ponting doesn't feel right, though with an automated system like this it's hard to get the individual ones precise, even if generally they're mostly right.

I find it very hard to split Ponting, Kallis and Sangakkara. Could put them in any order really, depending on how I'm feeling on that particular day.

Sanga definitely improved his standing in his latter years IMO. Had a golden end to his career.

Whatever it takes!!!
To be honest, we always have to keep in mind that apart from Bradman, almost all of these batsmen belong in some or other clumps of rating. With that in mind, these have been a very good reflection of how most would rate them, I think.
