DoG's Top 100 Test Batsmen Countdown Thread

DoG please save your thread. Post #15.
Yeah, I tried to save this thread and now it's somehow redeveloped into Fleming vs. Vaas. Nothing to do with Weekes or Kohli, unless your willing to develop some more mental gymnastics. And the arguments over that term are terrible and merely the old terrible Aus vs terrible Ind poster game. Terrible.

Vaas was one of the most skilled operators of his time. He bowled for most of his career like 2008-10 Zaheer Khan. Excellent bowler.

If DRS was there Lara would have been lucky to make 200 runs in the whole series. Probably was out 10 - 15 times to Vaas lbw against the reverse swinging ball. I watched the whole series on TV. Some of the decisions were WTF nature, and umpiring was generally poor. I think Lara got a dodgy one against him as well, but he was the main beneficiary.
I remember that series and Vaas dominated Chris Gayle who went cheaply throughout the series. Funny he managed to dismiss one left handed who scored very little but he dominated another who scored almost 700 runs?? Fact of the matter Lara made 688 runs in 3 tests. Vaas dismissed Lara one time but that's after he'd made 221. No one cares if he should have been given out. Records shows he dominated Vaas and Murali home and away.

You remember the series, but I don't think you watched it ball by ball. No question about it even in that series Vaas dominated Lara, and he scored very little off him. Many close lbw shouts turned down, some of were close to plumb. You may disagree, but, I am reciting from what I have seen during that series. The important thing is, Lara never dominated Vaas since that series as well, let it be ODI or Tests.

We'll agree to disagree...

Apologies for the delay. Slightly disappointed in the posting in the last couple of pages.

No.15

Sunil Gavaskar (India) 834

Quality Points: 754
Career Points: 80

Career/Runs: 1971-1987, 10122 (rank 13)

Overall average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 49.07 (51.12) 45.41 (47.30) 46.25 (44.87) (rank 23)
50 Innings Peak Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate (1977-1980): 66.62 62.62 48.97 (rank 13)
Non-Home Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 50.27 46.00 44.26 (rank 22)
Quality Opposition Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 51.05 46.98 47.79 (rank 20)

The first test batsman to cross 10000 test runs, Sunil Gavaskar is India's top ranked opener and his nation's 2nd highest ranked test batsman. The diminutive, elegant Gavaskar is one of only four batsmen to be ranked in the top 25 of every measure in this analysis (can you guess the other three?). He is also the top ranked opener of those who began their careers after the Second World War and he is often selected in Alltime World XIs since unlike Hobbs, Hutton and Sutcliffe he faced modern-day fast bowlers. Remarkably for a subcontinent batsman, he also has a better record overseas than at home. Gavaskar laid the foundation which the likes of Tendulkar, Dravid and Sehwag built on in the new millennium. He is the original Little Master.
