If DRS was there Lara would have been lucky to make 200 runs in the whole series. Probably was out 10 - 15 times to Vaas lbw against the reverse swinging ball. I watched the whole series on TV. Some of the decisions were WTF nature, and umpiring was generally poor. I think Lara got a dodgy one against him as well, but he was the main beneficiary. So did Lara. Decimated SL in the one series he played there.
you say this every so often, and i post the same replyHe was Vaas' bitch
I was saying in general, with ODIs included. Fleming had a tough time against him, not to the Gayle or Atherton level, but still had a lot of trouble. He played Murali very well to his credit.you say this every so often, and i post the same reply
stephen fleming averages 104 from 5 tests in sri lanka. he loved himself some murali.
i'll give you he averages a disappointing 33 against sl in nz with a handful of useful 50s, but you specifically said vaas got the big wicket of fleming in sri lanka and nooooope
Come on mate. I get what t’other saying, but if you had to choose an opening bowler of the past 15 years from a top eight test nation to face for a living, you’d choose him every time. Even over spuds like Sreesanth. He was a solid trier. At best. A left handed John Hastings.Vaas KOed a bunch of guys. He may not have been a great bowler, but at home, vs the top order (he has a higher percentage of top order wickets than pretty much anyone else), he kinda was. Which is what is being described. And it's especially understandable when all of the guys described are from outside the subcontinent, for whom Lankan conditions were the most alien.
I don't necessarily disagree with this. But on a damp Lankan morning, I don't think he will be the first in the list to face up. Even players who grew up on those conditions like Eng and NZ had their teams reduced to five down in no time when he was on song.Come on mate. This is a good effort. You know deep down that no one gives a crap about spin. Everyone knows this. That is why India is revelling in their new found pace ability. Now, they can be like Aus, WI, SA, Eng, Pak, etc, and pick their pace attack first and stop deluding themselves that spin matters. Quality against spin is a moot point in ATG teams if you cant last out the pace barrage. What I had said earlier about Steve Waugh is also applicable to both Ponting and Dravid. None of these 3 players are in top 20 players of spin since 90s. So no matter how good they were against pace bowling, they simply can't be on same level as Tendulkar/ Lara .

okVI makes a good point here. Spin reliant sides have and always will be second rate in historical terms. They give rise to batsmen who can’t play anything above waist height and they fail to take twenty wickets away from their own home decks which are deliberately rolled out as moon craters.
That’s why teams with good pace attacks are always rated more highly and why it’s only in the last 18 months you can genuinely say India has ever had a decent test side in historical terms.
Spin doesn’t matter in the scheme of things. It’s second rate cricket, and relying on it as the basis for your wicket taking renders you a lesser side. Hence blokes like Ashwin and Jadeja, who some imbos stupidly rated at various times the best bowlers in the world, actually get dropped from their own test side when they’re not playing on a bunsen. Because carrying two of them makes your team hopeless. Imagine Australia dropping Cummins because the pitch isn’t ideal? Ludicrous thought. Will be the first bowler picked everywhere.
That’s why blokes like Shami and Bumrah coming along is so important. They actually make their side competitive and worth watching for the first time since they began playing tests. It’s exciting.
Yessssss. Fantastic use of the meme. Love it.
