*Official* New Zealand in Australia 2019/20

this is pretty lacklustre from boult and southee. boys better dig in with the bat instead of the expected meek surrender.
I’m surprised it’s taken until the third session of day one of a test where they won the toss and bowled under cloudy skies for an NZ fan to say they’ve had no luck at all and everything is against them, woe are we etc etc.
doesnt surprise me the man who thought physics was already solved is easily surprised tbh

When cricket moved away from 9 I thought I'd miss the nostalgic aspect, but 7 have done very well.

Employing Ponting and Katich instead of people like Clarke and Warne was smart.

Adding women was smart. Alison Mitchell and Lisa Sthalekar are TOP notch ball by ball comms, and in all honesty Mel McLaughlin should be the overall host, the new Richie. She is polished.

I don't mind Brayshaw and Slater so much, excitable is good provided they understand the situation (which they do).

Would've been nice to have heard Bill once again in Melb, but I guess that era is over. God I loved Bill.
It's been very welcome, having a range of new voices. But each time I hear Slater I just keep being reminded why Geoff Lemon did that article all those years back in Spikey's signature, and the constant dumping on Brad McNamara the filthy bellend. Brayshaw seems to read the situation a lot better when it comes to excitement, last summer Slater was noticeably misreading it amidst a new and more reserved lineup. Especially in that first BBL game he did, was like he had done a ton of coke in the bathroom prior.

Yep, we've been awful with the new ball. Gone searching and bowled too many wide of off stump that aren't threatening anything.

Boooo. Same old same old. Nothing really happening for NZ. As it stands, this series looks 3-0 to aus. We looked competitive in the first session again but really fall away afterwards. And jfc our luck is horrible. Mix that with no real pace or spin in our arsenal, we just look flat. Southee ending the day with 122km nothing ball just sums it up. Feel sorry for the traveling kiwis out there. Hopefully we roll aus tomorrow.

Australia's really lucky they aren't 250/8 or something tbh. Tons of edges today.

They did dig in and ride the luck to their credit.

True, but TPC and Labushagne played a lot with soft hands as well, which makes a lot of difference.

Tbh it’s lucky it was cloudy or it would have just been another slow pudding with no sideways and a complete dirge - hard to score but easy to survive decks are the worst imo.

The mcg has sucked for most of the time I’ve been watching cricket tbh. The fact this deck has been spoken of around the traps in relatively positive terms compared to others tells you how ********* it usually is.

Southee right down on pace at days end too. Expected more from a senior bowler. Would have been better giving the new rock to Wagner or CdG

Great day at the cricket with Ozzie cuzzy bros. On that wicket would've been happy to have Australia 250/5, while 6 down nz would've been on top - needed the second new ball to provide the extra one or two but after disciplined bowling all day they wasted it.

Yes Australia edged a fair bit, though most wouldn't have carried to a fielder anyway so they cost runs but not wickets.

NZ need to add two wickets quick in the morning tomorrow.

Lastly, santner needs to score a lot of runs if he's going to bowl like he did today.

Really hope Travis pulls his head in here. Aust has 3 quality batsmen in their top six and Travis has the talent to be one him self with some discipline. Get KP back fit, decent opener and Carey eventually for Paine and Aust looks prime for that world test championship final

Smith was terrific today. So patient when he’s in the zone/ he needs to score runs
You could tell he was "in" early doors because he defended one back to mid-off and ran about three metres down the pitch waving his bat around to yell "no!"

Santner needs to go back to first-class level and prove himself with the ball there. There's no reason for him to be ahead of Sommerville, Patel, Sodhi, or Astle.

Looks like NZ did okay in session 1, pretty well to rein things in during sessions 2 and 3, and went tame once the new ball was taken. Sort of sums up the contest across the series so far, NZ have competed reasonably well in patches but gone rather flat (or Australia have been too good) during crucial initiative-seizing moments. CdG continues to find a way to always be in the game, while Santner's selection is as questionable as ever. Expecting Smith to score a dominating ton unless Wagner is on point from the word go tomorrow.
