The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

On a different topic, how do people rate Clarke as an ODI batsman? I was genuinely surprised to find that his away from home average is literally top 7 of all time. He captained a world cup win and was a genuinely good fielder. But he's not often talked about as being an ATG. Why is that so?
He had a period of 3-4 years in the middle of his career, basically between the 2007 and 2011 WCs, where he was pretty boring at best and actively slow at worst. He was always pretty solid and dependable, but never really played that many innings that stick in the memory. Very consistent ODI batsman though.

Coz that SR difference does not make up for the average difference. Especially when you consider them as overall MO batsmen, which means a variety of situations are possible.

I'm not sure who you're referring to?

Most of the batsmen who have higher averages than Symonds on that list had a career more recently than Symonds and still struck slower than him. The ones who didn't are the three listed before.

Unless you're arguing that all the specialist number 4s on this list who struck in the 80s in the last 10 years are better than a guy who did it a decade earlier at a strike rate in the 90s?

Vernon Philander announces retirement from Test cricket. A very clever bowler who made the best use of his strengths. In the right conditions, he was an unplayable bowler.
