The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Australia have 4 genuine contenders for atg one day xi but Symonds is definitely not one of them
Why do you say that?

Who else has as good of a record batting predominantly at 5 or lower? Dhoni, Bevan, Klusener, de Villiers, Buttler and Hussey that's it. And most of those guys are either locks or close to it. Averaging 40+ and striking at 90+ batting down the order is really hard.

Bevan or Dhoni are a pretty much a lock at number 6.

At number 7, only Dhoni and Butler are the only guys with an average of 40+. But they played around 30 odd matches in that position.

If you want a big hitter, Kapil Dev and Shahid Afridi are the choices for number 7. Both played more than 75 matches at number 7. Afridi has an average of 23 and 130 SR in that position. Kapil averages 24 and has a SR of 87 in that position.

Klusener played most of his matches at number 8. And he averages 58 and SR of 95 in that position.

I totally agree on that. Genuine front line bowler but his batting is piss weak at 7 or 8 (which is odd considering how he used to bat) so no spot for him.
Yeah I think a great argument can be made to suggest his was best ODI allrounder of all time but I still can't really find a spot for him in this team despite that given he'd have to bat five and he's just not good enough to justify that. He actually really struggled to successfully hit out immediately even when he did bat five; it was something he should have been good at but just wasn't unless he'd faced a few balls first and got set.

If you put Klusener at 8 then you have to pick a weaker batsman at 7 like Dev/Afridi so there's no loss in overall bowling strength. It's a bit odd.

This is me personally:

Rohit
Tendulkar
Viv
Kohli
AB
Buttler
Klusener
Akram
Murali
McGrath
Garner

A general question

Why not Mitchell Starc in an ATG ODI team? A genuine match winner who can single handedly win matches in ODIs.

An average of 21 and an unbelievable SR of 25. Starc has taken nine 4-fer and seven 5-fer in just 85 innings.

I have always rated Donald slightly better than McGrath. And Starc is a faster, better wicket taker and more entertaining version of Donald in ODIs.

I'm fickle with the bowling lineup. Starc and Donald are great and I'd maybe pick them over McGrath on a different day. Saqlain over Murali is another one.

Buttler may be a better batting option than either Dhoni or Gilchrist but both are better keepers. One possible XI is

Tendulkar
Jayasuriya
Richards
Kohli
De Villiers
Dhoni+
Buttler
Akram
Warne/Saqlain (I would avoid Murali for batting depth purposes)
Garner
McGrath

The problem for this XI is that Jayasuriya has to basically bowl 10, though I guess Viv could pick up some of the slack.

Starc
Donald
Bond
Saqlain

Attacking bowlers. Genuine wicket taking bowlers. For pure entertainment, I would love to see all 4 of them.

I can’t honestly see the logic in picking Warne over Saqlain or Murali in ODIs.

Not interested in arguing or debating. Just sayin.

Having a capacity crowd of 90,000 drunken fans chanting "Waaaarney, Waaaaarney" adds a major edge :-)
