I'm hitherto unaware of his work, but I made myself a bet that Brydon Carse couldn't be a native born Pom with a name like that and, lo and behold, another SA import.

His father James played for Rhodesia in the Currie Cup with the likes of Rob Bentley, Dave Houghton, Andy Pycroft, Duncan Fletcher, Paddy Clift, Richie Kaschula

Moved to PE and played for Eastern Province for years. Opened the bowling with the very good SA Rebel bowler Kenny Watson.

Interesting, thanks.

Sounds as if he's got decent cricketing pedigree. Let's hope the apple hasn't fallen too far from the tree.

Hope Banton doesn't go for too much at the IPL auction tomorrow. It's all coming very quick for him at the moment. A year ago he wasn't having a great winter in grade cricket in Australia having barely played for Somerset. There's probably going to be a dip at some point. I worry that the money and the pressure may be overwhelming and damage his long term prospects.

Be interesting to see how many other English get signed tomorrow. All players should be available for the whole tournament so you'd imagine some will get picked up.

Wonder if England's frontline spinner will have to go out on loan at the start of the county season. Hard to see Bess and Leach playing in the same side in April. Probably be div 2 as well given Somerset will be wary of allowing bess/leach leave to a competitor. Both need to be playing cricket obviously.
Bess in last year of contract iirc. Somerset in another Kieswetter/Buttler situation.

Some transfers news.

Yorkshire have signed Maharaj and Ashwin for the championship. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/51123219
Notts sign Barber after being released by Middlesex. Quick but can barely get it on the cut strip. Still at 24 it's good he's not dropping out of the professional game. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/51155211. Joins Hameed, Trego and Mo Abbas at Notts in 2020.
Meaker joins Sussex. Has barely played in the last few years. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/51033081
Philander I'm not sure has been 100% confirmed but has agreed terms with Somerset. https://www.somersetcountycc.co.uk/news/first-xi/vernon-philander-agrees-personal-terms/ Doesn't have a great record in county cricket iirc and I'm not sure he's going to do great with the packed schedule.

Yorkshire have made some interesting signings this winter, though signing 2 spinners must mean Rashid is not an option for red ball cricket again.

Also suggests Bess isn't heading there, despite the Test commentary bringing that rumour up again today.
Certainly a chance Bess ends up at Yorkshire at the end of the season when his contract expires. I would have thought Bess will run it down this year and see how it goes. Won't be short of suitors.

https://www.gloscricket.co.uk/news/jerome-taylor-joins-gloucestershire/ Glos sign Jerome Taylor on a 3 year deal. lol, he's going to be 39 by the end, and he seems already way past his peak. Typical garbage so typical of county websites to make no mention of what type of classification of contract he is on. Presumably kolpak.
On that note, ECB looking at 2 overseas players per county from 2021 onwards when Kolpak will no longer likely be relevant. Makes sense in the short term. https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/...seas-players-brexit-pushes-kolpak-window-shut

If you are allowed 2 overseas players, would that mean some south Africans could continue to play internationally whilst still playing county cricket?
