Warner is basically the batting Jadeja in being incredibly destructive against elite opposition at home but mediocre away. I think most, if not a lot on here, wouldn't have him in their top 50, but feels like he might sneak into the top 30.
Warner's already gone at 41. Still a bit higher than most would have had him though. Sehwag and Root I feel are kinda similar, maybe even Hayden. But I don't think we'll have a Jadeja level surprise.

My personal opener ranking:

Hutton
Hobbs
Grace
Richards
Sutcliffe
Gavaskar

Those are the ATGs. Then a huge gap down to the likes of Smith, Morris, Simpson, and Boycott.

Really surprised that Kane is below Root in this. Be interesting to see where they finish up at the end of their careers.

International Captain
No.35

Javed Miandad (Pakistan) 778

Quality Points: 704
Career Points: 74

Career/Runs: 1976-1993, 8832 (rank 15)

Overall average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 49.34 (52.57) 43.86 (46.73) 46.55 (47.04) (rank 25)
50 Innings Peak Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate (1984-1989): 57.74 53.12 46.77 (rank 50)
Non-Home Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 44.03 40.61 45.24 (rank 72)
Quality Opposition Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 40.51 37.59 45.77 (rank 110)

It may come as a surprise to many that Javed Miandad is not rated higher, nor is he Pakistan's top ranked batsman. Two factors count against him. One being that he never had a truly outstanding peak, only being ranked no.50 in that regard. In addition, his average against the quality opposition of his day was relatively mediocre. As a case in point, he only averaged 33.62 (29.79) against the West Indies from 28 innings, despite scoring two outstanding centuries on the 1988 tour. This also counts against his overall average, being marked down three points to 49.34. Miandad was without doubt though one of the great middle-order batsmen of his era and with Imran Khan ensured that Pakistan was usually second only to the great West Indian teams of the 1980s.

Why is a peak so revered again? Wouldn't it mean players without one were more consistent in cases where 2 guys averaged 50

Barry and Hutton are both greater than Gavaskar IMO.
I agree. Barry Richards is definitely underrated because he did not play much Test cricket. His performances in World Series Cricket (which was of a higher quality than most Test cricket) provide a glimpse of how special a player he was. Many cricketers consider him the most technically perfect batsman they have ever seen. He could also improvise brilliantly as well.

Hutton is an ATG opener. Meant Gavaskar is the only opener who made his debut post-WW2.

IMO, Gavaskar > Hutton though.

Barry Richards played just 4 Tests. Impossible to say he was better than a player who played 125 Tests.
