No.36

Kane Williamson (New Zealand) 777

Quality Points: 728
Career Points: 49

Career/Runs: 2010-present, 6370 (rank 91)

Overall average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 48.92 (52.21) 44.20 (47.19) 46.62 (51.57) (rank 26)
50 Innings Peak Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate (2013-2016): 65.41 56.25 47.59 (rank 27)
Non-Home Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 43.86 40.97 44.18 (rank 73)
Quality Opposition Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 47.43 43.35 46.79 (rank 42)

Kane Williamson has taken over from Martin Crowe as his country's greatest test batsman on this list, if not yet in the minds of most New Zealand cricket followers. He started off slowly and somewhat frustratingly, averaging only 33.94 (35.00) in his first 50 innings up to the end of 2013. This preceded his peak in which he averaged over 65 (original: 71.70) and became one of the fab four of the 2010s. He is currently ranked 4th in this esteemed group but has still averaged a very respectable 51.80 (56.25) in his last 50 innings. He is only 29 and thus a second great peak may be forthcoming. New Zealand fans would hope that it begins on Boxing Day.

Surprised at Kane rated lower than Root.

Also interesting that all the fab 4 are within top 36.

Unless Root doesn’t appear at all...

Surprised that Williamson is 4th.

NZ’s best batsman is Williamson.
Zim’s best batsman is Andy Flower.

The best from India, SL and Australia are pretty obvious.

For the purposes of this exercise, I believe it will be Bradman, Hobbs, Kallis, Sobers, Tendulkar, Younis, Sangakkara.

Probably not a popular opinion but I've always felt that Tendulkar is not that far ahead of Sunil Gavaskar imo. As a matter of fact, I could understand him being rated above SRT. Again just my opinion ....

Post-WW 2, there have been many great middle order batsmen.

Post-WW 2, But there has been only great opener IMO. And that is Gavaskar.

Using that logic, Gavaskar being rated ahead of Sachin wouldn’t surprise me

Any guesses which batsmen will troll us most by being ranked much higher than we expect? Basically, Jadeja of batting list?

Jumping back to Amla... these last 4 years of his career where he avg 20 odd, dropping his avg from 52 to 46 hurt him badly, compared to any longevity. I think that is both statistical and now also in peoples minds.

That is a perfectly fair opinion. Sunil was a pioneer of sorts. For what its worth, Sobers once mentioned him as the best batsman he has seen which is great coming from the legend.

Warner is basically the batting Jadeja in being incredibly destructive against elite opposition at home but mediocre away. I think most, if not a lot on here, wouldn't have him in their top 50, but feels like he might sneak into the top 30.
